(Oops, I forgot a word! Title of the thread should read: 97 Contour Starting to Accelerate Funny)
What happens is this....
I was on my way after work to Kansas City, driving approx. 65 MPH for 15 miles. Then, I get on I-70, and as I am accelerating back up to speed (70 MPH now), the engine sounded like it was accelerating oddly, and the tachometer would drop down to around two grand, then spike back up. It did this for a few miles, then I pulled off the interstate and decided to head back home. I stopped briefly, looked under the hood with the car running, then shut it off for a minute, then cranked it back up and took it home. Never experienced the problem again on the way home.
I did have the car out for a while this morning, and after about 30-45 mins of driving, I noticed the car was jerking mildly and the tachometer was acting a bit funny. This time, I just drove thru it, as I was on county roads, only traveling about 40-45 MPH most of the time. It did it one other time on the way to the house; I also noticed it hung on to 3rd gear for an extra couple seconds, and when it shifted the car back to 4th gear, it seemed to me that the shift was a bit "hard." When idling, there is no issue thus far. No "Check Engine" light; the O/D light is not flashing.
So the car still moves, but for now, I think I'll drive the 84 Crown Vic or 93 F-250 to work, etc. But from what I described, what is the thinking here on what the problem might be? I have read several threads here about problems others have had; I just wanted to post my problems in case any of my issues are unique. Hopefully, it's just a sensor that is easily remedied, and not tranny failure! I have had many things go wrong with this car since I bought it in 2003 with 38,000 miles on it (including having the flywheel replaced). Tranny was just flushed in June 2008, so I know the fluid is new.
Any help that anyone might be able to offer is very appreciated! I know with your help, I can make the right decisions and hopefully not waste a ton of money.
