Hello,
I was driving down the street last week and my car stalled on me in traffic. When I got it home I conducted a series of tests to find the problem. I plugged a obd reader in the car and a p1383 code popped up. I decided to finally look at the belt after various other attempts to fix the problem of crank and no start. I noticed that my timing belt was half way off the pullies and was very loose. I'm not sure if it was broke because I couldn't take the timing belt guard off to get to the belt because of the motor mount. I called multiple shops to get a estimate. I was told since I have dohc that most likely my heads are damaged. I was under the impression that my engine is a non interference motor. So estimates were from 700 without head damage to fix timing belt or 1400 to fix heads and timing belt.

Non interference is correct. I’m about to do my second timing belt on my 99/00 contour. Last one was about 3 years/50,000 miles ago. I’m only doing the belt and tensioner pulley this round. Wish it wasn’t such a pain to do it. Go to the FAQ page here and they have great step by step instructions for the job. And remember, you get what you pay for when it comes to parts.
