ive noticed recently that my car makes a whinning noise when accelerating.

to my knowledge, id has only been doing it in the cold with the heat one (but it also does it with the heat off)

only when accelerating and increases with rpm.

on a side note, im not sure if this has anything to do with this problem, but every once in a while, my battery light will blink on and off. it never stays on more than 15 seconds, but its still on. is this the battery or the alternator? (i life at school and harly drive the car except every once in a while on the weekend so its been sitting for about 5-6 months...with me running it about 20 times for maybe 1 hour)

67K miles, 98 Zetec atx

thank you

The noise, the flickering light, and the fact that its acceleration controlled ALL point to a failing alternator, or POSSIBLY a failing tensioner.

Start looking in to replacing (either yourself, or a shop..yikes) the alternator within the next month, or possibly less! It COULD last much longer, but still.. better safe than sorry.

well it sounds like its coming from the alternator. i went out today and revved it up and its defiantly coming from that region. yay.

ok on a side note i get the battery light flicker at like 5000-6000 rpms

any idea what causes that becuase i just replaced battery and altenator

What causes it? the battery and the alternator.

lol

A reman alt is the same as a junkyard alt: crap.
You COULD look in to goldentours wiring fix, in the duratec maintenance faq, but I'd make SURE you don't have a problem with the alt, the tensioner, the belt, or the wiring itself first.

I thought that wiring fix was for the flickering headlights & such. The flickering alt light on the dash is a crap alternator... Yes ?

Definately double check the tensioner & belt. Don't wanna spend money you don't have to.
