Well I've only owned my 'Tour since the end of August... bought it for $2300 with 106k on it.

It now has 115k on it, and I've put close to 3 grand into it already...

Last night I was driving thru Milwaukee on the interstate, and all of a sudden the engine had a really bad knocking sound. I was gettin off the interstate, car died on the off-ramp... I was able to coast into a gas station and park it overnight.

Went back up there today with my uncle/mechanic, he started it up, turned it right off, and pronounced it dead.

We had to get it outta the parking lot of the gas station, so he decided that its already trash, so we just had to get it not too far, so he drove it there. I was driving behind him, and I could hear the 'Tour's engine knocking in the car I was driving.

So now, tomorrow, my uncle and I are searching for a 2.5....

haha well the 3.L is outta the question... I'm not putting in the engine and I dont think that my uncle would be up for fabricating in one...

They did find an engine for the car tho... $600 for it, with 77k on it. And they are charging $900 for labor I think... i dunno I thought I was told a total of $1500... i'm not the one dealing with it, my parents are, so, I have no idea... I told them to just give me the 1500 to put towards a Kia...

:nonono:..

Dude! Find a damn 3L out of a 2001+ taurus/escape and drop it in! Even if your car is an automatic, all you would need is the subframe and an MTX tranny. You could get away with this for right around 1500 total! It's not that difficult of a task. The motor can be had (low miles) for around 500.00. Subframe from junkyard 150.00 and a tranny for around 250-350. Then all you have to do is pay someone for the time. It is totally doable. My .02 cents.

Actually, even at $1,500 for the "new" engine, it is still worth it. If you buy a new car (around $25,000), you are looking at $6500 to $7000 a year for the next 5 years. Now, if you are downgrading to a Kia Rio, then that is a different ball game.

3l 3l 3l 3l 3l 3l 3l 3l 3l 3l 3l 3l easily done and your tour will beat the crap out of kia's anyday

no man should ever drive a kia "Killed in Automobile"

I'm not advocating the purchase of a Kia (for better or worse), but I can see why you do not want to put more money into the car. After the 3 grand put in already it's lesson learned I say. Who's to say after you put the money into a new engine, that the transmission doesn't take a dump the very next month?

Now I've put nearly 3K into my Maxima in the year (and +22K miles) I've owned it, but I keep doing so because I find the car worth the money still. Plus I am completely confident that once I get the work done, the car will once again be in good condition. So far it's been mostly surprises (cat, a/c compressor, and lately rust) but all of the parts have been easily replaceable and not paving the way for future problems. I have to put some money into the suspension too but at 85K miles that's just maintenance.

If you're not confident that nothing will break soon after you put so much money into the car, then it's time to let go IMO unless you find the car worth keeping. And these days you can pick up another Contour for 2K and just swap parts that break if you like the car that much.

Although, a 3L is fairly cheap (and easier to find than a 2.5L), and puts so much more power into the car. :)

Can someone provide more info on this topic. I'm interested in an ATX to MTX swap, even if it requires me getting a 3L at the same time. I can't think of any reason why this would be the case--- What will it take to put MTX in my SE? For the love of god!
