Is it possible to reprogram the convenience/security features??

Its something that I've been thinking about ever since I was locked out of my car with it running (on new years eve, in 15 degree weather, in a snowstorm, with my wallet and phone and jacket inside, in a deserted carpark, about 3 miles from town, at dusk) because of the stupid self locking deal immediately after starting.
My other peeve is that the door chime goes off when the drivers door is open while the car is running.
Is it possible to make changes to the way these functions work? My preference would be for example, to turn off the door chime altogether (still keeping the headlight chime) and disable the self locking.

I am now so paranoid of the self lock deal, that I wont leave my keys inside the car without having a window down in case the car locks itself.

Definitely sounds like an aftermarket alarm. In which case the answer is yes, but you'd have to figure out what type it is beforehand.

As for the locking-self-out .. I heard a very useful tip on here once. Go to the store and get a cheap non-PATS key (the flatter the better) and get your car key copied. If the employees refuse to copy it because of the PATS chip just say "I know just do it!". Then keep this flat key in your wallet. It won't start your car, but it will unlock the doors in case of emergency.

Very interesting. I bought my car secondhand and it has a Karr alarm installed, but I thought it was disabled. To be clear, immediately after I start the car the doors lock and then they unlock again when I turn the car off.
I will definately do that trick with the non-PATS key. Since it can't start the car, I might mount it on the car somewhere (in the previous instance my wallet got stuck inside).

I have made a spare key and slipped it into a velcro sleeve that i made... then in a hidden place i cleaned it really well and mounted the key there... on the outside of my car so if anything ever happens, I am not locked out...

get your key copied and buy one of those lil cases to hold it, case comes with a big magnet on it, therefore just stick the case somewhere under your car, the key will only open your doors so its all good.

So still looking for confirmation:
Does everyones doors lock when they start the car or just me?
Is there a way to reprogram these functions?
I will be getting a key just in case, but I am still curious about modifying these functions.

My aftermarket alarm locks the door like you said lock after starting and unlock after turning car off.... I would be intrested in reprograming that too...

Yes, I have read many reports that people that had a FORD PATS programmer, you can do away with ALOT of this Ford BS. Granted it was an Explorer, Taurus that I was reading about, I dont believe our's is that much different. For 1 instance, modding a extra key to work with your car,( Ford did this for me, but I have a remote start and I have to have a key buried under the dash to bypass PATS. since the guy there at Ford was a dick and wouldnt turn it off for me. But, alas im sure he couldnt cus of liability, especially me being at Ford so I dont blame him. I shouldve went to a locksmith. I hate ford dealers) Turning off PATS altogether (it IS possible) As far as locking doors after start, I don't believe the ford stock dealio doing that, its gotta be your Karr deal. Do you still use Karr keyfob or Fords? You cant tell me the PATS programmer can only ADD a key and not mess with the "features" BS. It CAN!

As built from the factory, Contours don't have this ability. Look into your aftermarket alarm.
