MSDS Headers, exhaust and reliability

Hey,

I just bought my SVT Contour and unfortunately the cat(s) went bad a week later. Instead of being replaced by the dealer at their extravagant cost they're going to reimburse me a fair amount of money from the car. I'm thinking of getting the MSDS headers/y-pipe and custom mandrel bent exhaust. My questions are:

1. Has anyone had any problems with their headers/y-pipe and their reliability (i.e. cracking)?
2. For the exhaust I was thinking a 2.5" exhaust w/ a 2.5" inlet Magnaflow to 2.25" dual outlets. Is this feasible, space-wise?

Thanks for the help. I'm really not a newbie when it comes to cars its just that I want to take care of my new 'baby.' I've been into turbos and DSMs in the past so I'm only accustomed to unreliable turbo cars. I've never had a completely reliable, modded daily driver.

Please help ease a guy's fears.

I dont think anyone has had any issues with cracking, even with uncoated headers.

If you thinking about doing a quasi-dual exhaust system, what you talked about sounds good. If your thinking about doing true duals, do 2.25" all the way back.

From what I've heard the cats you take from MSDS are crappy, so unless you live in an area that requires emissions your best bet would be to put a test pipe instead of a cat.

Second I don't know what would be the benefits from the dual outlet muffler over the actual SVT system (1 inlet, 1outlet + Y). If I was you I would just put a Hi-Flow muffler instead of the resonator.

What size is the stock exhaust? I would assume that 2.5" exhaust would be ideal for the SVT's engine size.
As far as the exhaust is concerned I am going to use a hi-flow cat w/ no resonator. I want to do the dual exit muffler since its easier to fab than a y-pipe for the dual tips.

2.25" for true duals on a stock svt? OVERKILL!!

If you are going for True-Duals, go 2" piping max.

I'm not going for true duals (more expensive), I was thinking of one 2.5" that splits to 2.25" duals at the end.

Only problems I had with my headers is they were a MoFo to put on. They still look like they did the day I put them on. I check them everytime I change my oil.

Yeah, they look like they're going to be a pain. Any tips/advice for the isntall?

Mine have been on for over a year now and look just as good as the day I got them out of the box, except for one spot where I seared some flesh off when the tranny shifter linkage was unkind to me, so with a knife and a spare poly bushing from a mustang front sway bar I made a temporary replacement while on the side of the road..

I would just re-use the stock dual pipes. They are mandrel bent stainless. You just tie a 2.5" mandrel bent single pipe into a reworked clamshell split. Add a straight through resonator and some Ultraflows out back and you have a killer exhaust for very little cash. At least as good as anything you can buy. Actually better IMO since it uses Ultraflows which are superior to anything offered by our aftermarket.

I've had my uncoated MSDS headers and y now for a year and almost 10,000 miles. I coated it with the por 15 stuff. I have the engine out now and the stuff heald up surprisingly well.
