I was looking under the car and the axle boot had a cut in it w/ grease coming out. What effect can this have on drivability, someone told me this is why my car is pulling, that the axle was dry and binding causing it to pull one way when I give it gas and another when I let off, as the car is doing that.

If you're losing grease the axle will eventually go dry and eat itself. If you wanna be cheap you can go grab a universal boot kit to grease it up and clamp a new boot on there.

I just put new tie rod ends, sway bar end links, brakes and bearings on yesterday and I noticed the same thing... a cut boot on the drivers side.
First thing I did was check RockAuto.com for a price. It looks like you can buy the whole thing (reman) for $50-$60. The Motorcraft one is $290. What's the difference?
How big of a project is this? Can a guy like me do it? (See above for what I just did this weekend.) Any special tools needed?

Not trying to hijack, I think this is a helpful topic...

axles arent too hard to change getting the clip to release from the trans can be a pain at times but if you cn do all you listed you should be able to tackle an axle

to the op I highly doubt that is the cause of your problems. Since your literally like 10 min from me we should get together and let me take a look at it.

FYI - those universal quick (split) boots don't work for Contours on the inner CV only for the outer. Inner CV hub is not round, it has scalloped edges.

I only mentioned this because some auto parts (Advance Auto, forgot the other) have a parts listing and will sell you one but it won't work.

Replace the axel

Replace the axel

If this is the original axel in the car. Buy a reman axle assembly which contains 2 new boots, and 2 rebuilt cv joints. Just replace the whole thing, these cars are pretty long in the tooth and about 100,000 miles is what you can expect an axel to go. Not much more money than a single boot and just a little more work.

+1 That really is the best answer. Trying to just do a repair will end up nearly the same price plus all the extra labor. Just change it and be done with it.
