Engine Moaning

Hello All,

My engine started making this loud moaning sound at about 126k, but not often enough to track it. It now has 152k on it and seems to do it several times a day, mainly when its cold, but does it at running temps as well. The one time that I heard it with the hood open, it sounded like it was comming from the air filter box. This moaning causes the engine to rev up about 800-1000RPM then drops below idle when it goes away. I can force it to go away by reving the engine higher. This most commonly happens at 0-5MPH but has happened at highway speeds. Does anyone know what this is?

Thanks,
Emphanidzo

Howdy, sorry to hear of your troubles. Please start by telling us about your car. What year, engine, transmission, & etc. We need this info to help you define the problem. The more info the better.

Merry Christmas

Its a 1999 Contour Sport, with a 2.5L V6. Standard Transmission. 152K Miles. Runs great, with the exception of the moaning. I Replaced the Air Filter with a K&N. I used the seals that came with it to ensure a good seal on the box.

This would be "The Moose". I've only had very mild cases of it so I haven't done the fix, but look up the throttle hang fix on the CEG main page. If you want more info search for moosing on this and the old forums. Theres plenty of info.
Throttle hang fis is like 25c to do. Some others have been saying that replacing the IAC also fixes it.

Thanks everyone. I never heard of that until today. I forwarded the information to my mechanic just for reference. I knew that if anyone knew, it would be you guys. This forum is great.
