Well I finally got a job and can afford to put the Contour on the road, I just got it safetied tonight and put TD Insurance on it.

TD wants a photo inspection done within 30 days, thing is, I have an aftermarket radio, subs/amp in the trunk, cheap aftermarket intake and some small stuff like resonator delete and amp meter in the dash.

Will they up my premium if they see this stuff or is there some kind of allowance (since everything is well under $1000) or should I put the stock intake on and what not? I just don't want anything to happen if they don't know about this stuff and not cover me.

Also can I just tell the inspector I dont want coverage on any aftermarket stuff, and my premium shouldn't be affected?

Sorry I'm an insurance n00b :blackeye:

Thanks :o

Well, IIRC they'll insure the car at its present state/value when you open the policy (that includes all the goodies you put on it)

I only had to do this when I got my first car and they only took pics of the exterior....I assume that in case of collision they need to make sure they cover up their arse ....you can also go the no deductibles route and save yourself some moneys...as they're not quite worth for these cars

I guess it depends who you talk to and they're just being more weary on newly/never insured before drivers..

Also, expect a call from them or an email asking you the estimated value of the modifications done on your car.

Thanks for the reply

I got my mom to do all the technical stuff setting up with insurance since I have no idea what I'm doing and she does, so I think she said it has no mods but I guess it doesn't matter now

Also TD is way cheaper than any of the other companies, even Bel Air was $4,000-something, and TD is under $2,000

Guess I'll leave it the way it is and hope they call or email like you said. Or just say I bought it like that

I'm with RBC and quite happy with them.

You can't be fully covered for that amount with TD, are ya?

in any case, you're car is not extensively modified to get them worried; these are little things here and there + who's gonna see that you don't have a res? most people can't tell the difference of w/ or w/o anyway.

Your audio system is the only thing that they may ask you something about, but if it's under a certain value they automatically ignore it as an insurable item unless you specify that you want it insured against theft.

Well I have 2 million liability, no collision (not worth it really), 500 comprehensive deductible, and a bunch of other stuff is included.

Your probably right though, I didn't pay much for my audio stuff so that shouldn't be a problem. I've also heard they just take a few pics of the body and thats it

We'll see what happens :)

I think you'll find that they're asking for the pictures to see what condition the car is in. If you send them a picture, and all the bodywork is good, and then you make a claim, they'll be able to see that yes, that fender wasn't dented when you bought the insurance. Kind of works for you, if you have a "real" claim.

Are they just asking you to send in some pictures, or do they want you to go somewhere for them to inspect/photograph the car?

If you can send in your own, can you take your pictures so they can see all the panels, bumpers and glass are good, without showing the mods you don't want them to see?

I have not heard of any insurance company that will let you submit a photo of your vehicle. They need a reputable company whom they trust just so they don't do it themselves....think of the liabilities with prospect clients submitting photos of their vehicles; there has to be a verification process somewhere in the flow chart.

Mine did...

The car has been appraised 10 years before, but the wanted updated pictures of it. E-mailed them in, and end of story.

weird.....come to think about it it's a waste of time anyway and prob they don't even look at the pics... I've only been asked to provide pics for my first car, nobody ever asked me anything about the other 3 I insured afterwards...

They're trying to protect themselves. You "proved" to them that you're on the up and up with your first car. No questionable claims, etc (obviously I'm just guessing here)

Or some one's not following the process at the insurance company:cool:

Don't forget, these insurance companies are all independent, and while here are some established practices, this part of it is not. They all do things somewhat differently. Ask 3 companies, get 3 different processes.

you make a valid point with "building a rep" with the insurance dog.

and even if they're cutting corners, they're still alright. if you declare having a stock car when you have a heavily modded one, they're still paying you for what you declared/insured when you get involved in an accident; they'll find a way.

True. Thats why i'm not really worried about it, not like the stereo equipment is worth alot anyway. I also had the car e-tested today with my intake and open pcv system all on, not a problem (passed with flying colours  ).

Have to take it to the same place for the inspection eventually when I get another day off work.

Worst case scenario, if they make a big fuss over your mods, I've got a great insurance broker who found me a great rate. Best part? No pictures required.

Best of luck though, I hate the whole insurance process.
