How much fluid?

I was planning on draining the old tranny fluid soon and was wondering how much is needed to refill? The Contour is an ATX. I'm not planning on a full flush, just draining what I can of the old fluid. My Chilton manual says the capacity is 20.6 pints which is 10.3 quarts. Is this correct?

yes that sounds correct. just make sure you check the level and make sure its full.

however with a drain and fill you might not use that much. but the p/s using the same fluid as the atx so you could use any extra to change that.

Oh really the p/s uses the same fluid? Didn't know that, thanks. Now mercon V is the fluid to use now right?

Drain and refill is about 3.9 quarts, IIRC. The TOTAL amount of fluid in the system ranges from something like 9.5 - 10.5 quarts depending on the year. There were lots of small changes. I'm hoping you consulted a Haynes/Chilton/Ford manual for your value?

I was wondering that, as a previous post said 4 quarts "drain and fill" but the Owner's Manual lists the tranny capacity as 10.6 quarts. I was hoping I didn't buy too little!

Yea as I said in the first post the chilton manual said 10.3 quarts. I was just wondering if that's for refilling the tranny that's been totally flushed or just a drain and refill?

I use about a gallon at a time, all of it will not come out. The converter stays pretty much full, no way to drain that without taking trans apart. You drain gallon, replace and drive for a week and then do it again. A third time later if you want to change it all. I use any type of power steering fluid I have around for the PS pump, it all seems to work well.

You can drain the 3.9 quarts all at once. In between each drain + refill just take a quick lap around the block and it should be fine. Then just do it again.

So I ran some quick math...

Drain + Refill.......Old Fluid (qts)....New Fluid (qts)
1...........................6.4....................3.9
2............................4......................6.3
3...........................2.5.....................7.8
4..........................1.55...................8.75

The number of quarts indicates the number of quarts of fluid left of each AFTER that particular drain + refill is done.

*DISCLAIMER* This only applies to a 10.3qt capacity ATX. Values may change slightly for other capacities.

Ok I'm still a little unclear. If I just let the tranny drain out it will drain about 4 or 10 quarts?

Did you not read my post? I clearly lay out the exact (to the nearest .05qt) number of quarts of new and old fluid assuming you drain out 3.9 quarts and refill with 3.9 quarts.
