zetec engine bearings going?

ok it was much less noticable, and went away faster this afternoon, but then again it was also alot warmer out too.

sounds like the lifters, my 96 Made that noise when the motor was cold very loudly, and quieter as the motor warmed up, I found it was louder when the oil was dirty as well.

really really hard to hear. I cant tell for sure what I am hearing there. Does it only make the sound under a load? Do you have a bad cat?

only under load. cat is fine as far as i know .... just passed tail pipe emissions and all levels where well below the limits.

yes its hard to hear. its there, its a higher pitch sound that is like a tapping that increases with rpm

It sounds just like my old Zetec, both before and after the turbo. it was definitely more noticeable after the turbo install though, and i was using 10W40. I would say switch back to 5W30 and if that doesnt help the only thing you could possibly do would be to swap out lifters. of course, at $16.xx a piece, thats not exactly cheap.

Just checking

Just checking

My ford exploder would make a ticking sound when it was cold out and then go away as the engine warmed up. Turns out to be a #$*! exhaust gasket. Would rather it have been a lifter, less money and time to fix. So I cranked up the radio and sold it in the summer time.

Might this be your problem. I KNOW its not that hard to replace the exhaust manifold gasket on a four cyl, unless you live in the rust belt.

its not the exhaust gasket. I had my msds headers leak on my duratec and it was all the time.

this is definately internal to the engine. again it was making the noise again this morning. had some idiot pull out in front of me and then take the right hand turn very slow ... needless I had slowed down so I dropped to 2nd and just about floored it. It of course made noise but after that it was silent again. yesterday afternoon it was great, back to how it always was.

are you guys sure you are hearing what I am? to really hear what i am talking about in the video I had to turn the volume way up. otherwise you just hear road noise and lower pitched sounds.

im pretty sure i heard what your talking about. I put on a pair of headphones and turned the volume up some. sounds like a faint, very fast tap, tap, tap, tap, tap....

I still think its the lifters

same here, my 96 was 2x louder than that when cold and I drove it 36K miles with no issues. I would say it makes the motor sound like a diesel engine, like a really fast "cladder" noise.

Either way who cares? Its your beater, if the bearings go find a low mileage zetec for $16 and drop it in in a weekend with a new clutch and such. FIXED.

yeah thats it. now I just need to check if it from the top or bottom.

The fact that you have a manual makes it a bit harder to pinpoint the sound. It was easy for me...I pulled the e-brake, put the car in D, and took a listen. This put a small load on the engine and made the sound quite noticeable on the top end, cylinder 1 to be exact. I'll try and get a video for you today Brian.

Well it's funny cuz I'm going home today, but by the time I get there, the engine will be quite warm . I will let you know, however.

about the only time it seemed similar to what I am hearing was when you rev'd the engine alittle after starting it.

Of course the engine will be loud in cold weather, you're running way too high an oil viscosity. Before all this speculation gets out of hand, change the oil!

I'll show it to you in person next week. We'll have to kill a couple hours at your house while we wait for the engine to get cold . The cell phone vid was crappy.

:face palm:

yes I know the cold makes can make it louder. however the sound I am hearing is new. also I have been running 10w-40 for years now, its fine. I already changed the oil and yes I used 10w-40 again, no difference.
