OK from what i have read here i am going to have to buy a code scanner/reader. i live a bit far from a place that dose it free and at 70 bucks a shot from the shop down the street, it sounds like it will pay for its self in no time. would like to get one that is not just a generic reader. but one that will read the ford only codes too. plus the "the getting ready to turn on the cheek engine light codes" ( forget the right trim for this) looking at spending no more then 200 on one. so what brand and type/model is the best bang for the buck out there thanks Dave

well i know around here Canadian Tire has sales on them and when on sale theyre usually under 100 bucks, and thats CAD. I forget what year you said the car was, but you will have to make sure you get the right one. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong - just going off the top of my head - OBDI is for pre 96's and OBDII is for post 96. They did come out with a newer one just recently but I forget what its called and it doesnt apply to you either. I beleive any scanner should read all the ford codes...

I got a basic one at Harbor Freight for like 40 bucks...gives the numbers...to erase codes you let it cycle through them 3 times.

It also came in handy because it is a 2 piece design...the little unit and then the cord...I had to use the cord to do datalogging with an SCT chip in it.

If you want a handheld without having to worry about downloading into a computer or what nots, then get the Actron C9145 for about $200 on sale at most stores. This will give you real time live scans with PID and freeze frame data too (besides just reading and erasing codes). If you want, the data can also be download into the computer or printer.

I think quite a few CEGers have been happy with the Alex Peper ($150????) which can be attached to a notebook and also gives real time scans with PIDs and freeze frame too.
