Well as most know there has been some talk about the $20 MAF adapter from Pepboy's that starts at 4" and tapers down to line up with the MAF perfectly. I figure that I'm going to give it a try and see how it works. But since the adapter flares out to 4" I am going to need a different filter than the RU-3530 which has a flange of 3.75" and diameters of 5.375" at the base and 4.375" at the top and is 7" long. I have also seen the RU-1785 recommended and it is 5" round by 8.5" long. What I was wondering was does a larger air filter with more surface area make that much of a difference? If so what is the largest that I could put in there? Also does the length of the flange matter? I see everyone using the .625" long flanges and is there any reason that I couldn't go up to a 1" to 1.75"? The filters that I was considering for the 4" adapter were the RD-1460 which is 7" in diameter and is 9" long and has a flange of 1". Or the RE-0870 which is 9" long and has diameters of 6" at the base and 4.625" at the top and has a flange length of 1.75". Is there any reason that either of these would not fit in a CSVT? I know that there are many smaller ones out there but if the larger ones make any difference at all then I want to get one of these.

For a 4" flange... here are some options which I already have calculated.

k&n "typical" 3.75" ru-3530 for comparison:
5.38 x 4.38 x 7.00 -- total length=7.63"; CFM=642.92

k&n:
6.50 x 4.50 x 8.00 -- total length=9.75"; CFM=828.96; model=RF-1027 (chrome cap :()

aFe (full velocity stack models):
6.00 x 4.75 x 7.00 -- total length=8.38"; CFM=708.86; model=24-40011
6.00 x 4.75 x 8.00 -- total length=9.38"; CFM=810.12; model=24-40012
