I don't recall ever seeing temps this low .... the wired thermometer in the window says zero while the wireless one out on the deck reports -7

-12 per the Volvo's gauge on the ride to work this morning.
The scenery was eery. We didn't get any precipitation overnight, and yet all of the trees looked as if there was rain that froze. Even the long grasses were frosted.
Also, the sky over the millyard was alive with steam from everyone heating. With the sun peaking out, there was an odd pink glow in the sky.

yeah I set my heat at 70 last night instead of letting it dial back to 62 overnight. glad I did that when I got up this morning.

My roommate cranked it up to 70° during the night I guess. I woke up sweating since I had several blankets on including 2 comforters.

Why would you set the thermostat higher in your house unless it is drafty? It will maintain the temperature as usual.

Anyways - my home temp gauge (mounted under my deck) said -12 when I got up and the Milan showed as low as -19 on the morning commute.

It's currently 10. I seem to recall a day in 2004 or 2005 where the high for the day was +5F. Windchills down to -12 or so. Look at it this way... when it hits 30 on Monday, it's goign to feel nearly tropical!

yeah I remember that two week period also in January. the highs where around 13 at best. it was the same january that we had the first beater meet at that pizza place outside of worcester and then we went to ryans for a bit.

Reminds me of something I read:

"Why, in the Summer, do we keep our A/C on so the house is 60°, but in the Winter we crank it up to 70° because we're cold?"

Thank you!

I'd swear I heard the news say something about the "lowest temps in decades," but I KNEW it was this cold, if not colder, just a couple of years ago.

Heheh. We've cranked the heat to 70 once in the last 2.5 years. 60 - 64 is perfect for the house almost all winter.

well I don't recall negative temps at that time. I think at my parents at least it was in the single digits overnight and then maybe in the teens during the day.

so I would say it would be pretty close. although on the weather channel in the history highs and lows the other day they did show negative numbers as the historic low, like 40 years back or something like that.

I remember exactly now, it was Jan 05. I know because I had just finished school and was not working so luckly I didn't have to go anywhere in that cold weather. my father was driving my 99 that winter and my mother her 99. My father put drop lights out under the batteries overnight to help warm the batteries some to aid in starting in the morning when they left for work.

The Tony's Pizza beater meet was when I had my first Contour, so it was winter '03 or '04.

I am freezing in my apartment, but both indoor thermostats indicate it is between 67-68 degrees, so it's got to be just me. My outdoor gauge has died.

Imagine waking up to that every morning in the winter....because that is MN  The reason for the "frosting" is because there is still a dewpoint but "When the dew point temperature falls below freezing it is often called the frost point, as the water vapor no longer creates dew but instead creates frost or hoarfrost by deposition." Just like dew....but frozen. You can get some nice pictures if you get up early enough.

We got above 0 today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I seriously was walking around today without a jacket on, almost made it to 10 degree.

I drove through Manchester this morning and saw the steam you were referring to. The Merrimack River along 293 was incredibly steamy too, it was almost worse than the factories and apartments.
