Motor oil?

The other thing I'd like to mention is that if you take your car to a quick lube type joint(jiffy lube etc...) I really hope you have great luck because they do NOT hire certified techs or have any sort of real training or mechanical knowledge at all. They hire high school/college students and random people which is why its so cheap to get your oil changed there since they only pay them minimum wage. Also, they use "bulk oil" which is whatever swill is cheapest at the time and lord knows if they actually use the correct weight or whatever is easiest to get to at the time. When I got my CSVT a few weeks ago one of the first things I did was change the oil since the guy before me always took it to a quick lube place. The oil was a good color but sure enough the filter was ridiculously loose and I'm amazed how it hadn't come off yet from regular driving in addition to being a no name brand I've never heard of. Googling the name revealed it is made by the same company who makes fram filters which means it was a crap filter.

CHANGE YOUR OWN OIL! It is cheaper using advance/autozone oil(same thing the quick lube places use if you're lucky) you KNOW that its done properly and honestly its alot faster to put your car up on ramps, crawl under and do it then drive to a quick lube and wait for the high schooler to change your oil and then drive back home. Did I also mention you'll be using a high quality filter instead of whatever bulk chinese garbage filter they'll use at the quick lube?

Sry if this is rantish, I just can't fathom how someone would risk their car to a quick lube.

Scotty,

I completely concur, especially if you want to use synthetic oil in your car. My friends wife got conned into getting a "premium" synthetic oil change at the local Firestone quick lube...$97.99!!! I would bet everything in my checking acct. that it was bulk, dino 10w30 and a crap Fram filter that went in there too. The tech told her the engine could "be destroyed" if she didn't use synthetic oil !!! I can do a full 7.5 qt full synthetic oil change with a purolator filter on my jag for under 30 bucks just by keeping an eye on the sales papers.

Agreed, head to wally world and pick up their super tech synthetic oil and a super tech filter(great filter and their syn. is a very good oil) for dirt cheap and you're good for 3,000 miles.

Way more than 3000. 7500-10000 wouldn't be a problem for most engines.

True, but I am anal retentive and $30 for a synthetic change every 2-3 months isn't going to break the bank and gives me peace of mind. I usually wind up letting it go to 3500-4000 but no more.

Definitely use motor oil. It will prolong the life of your engine.
Depends on who it is. If some other guy doesn't use oil it means I get a CSVT for not much money. Based on the $97.99 oil change price mentioned elsewhere in this post one could get a good 3L every few changes.

I run a 10,000 mile OCI in the Jag and the wife's Caddy tells me when to change the oil, usually around 7500 miles. I've been using castrol 0w30 I got on sale for the last few oil changes, but have some pennzoil platnum that will go in next.

But why not spend $10 on a regular oil change that will do 3000-5000 miles?

I for one have decided on doing my best to reduce my carbon footprint and the impact I have on the environment. Could you imagine if every car in america used 75% less oil for oil changes? The average car holds 5 qts, changed every three months is 5 gallons of oil a year; in 2006 ther were 250,851,833 registered passenger vehicles in the good ole' US of A; lets asume roughly 85% get the 3000/3 mo treatment at 5 galons a year thats 213,224,058 vehicles using a combined 1,066,120,290 gallons of oil per year. If everyone did one year OCI's like me the country could save 75 million gallons of motor oil per year, and that's just a very rough estimate, it could be much more.
