my 98 csvt has the known problem of grinding going into 3rd gear. all other gears are fine and dont have any problems. when i double clutch and baby it into 3rd i dont get the grinding.

Right now money is really tight and im not that great with workin on cars so i have to get it fixed by someone else. i got a price of 600 to replace 3rd and 4th gear snycro and that includes labor. is there a chance i can get away with just replacing the them? or should i just get the hole tranny rebuilt?? rebuilt = around 1,300
or anyone have a rebuilt tranny for sale?

thankfull for your advice

Running Ford Honey MTX fluid? That helps alot... I brought a buddies trans to my local shop and they install a torsen, bearings, upgraded fork and a 3rd synchro for less then 300 - so shop around....

Well crap! It didn't even occur to me to have mine rebuilt instead of simply replaced... I already bought a used tranny with a 3-year warranty. But then again, my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd are all dying on me at once. Plus I'd like to have that extra trans to send towards Terry Haines one day.

After shopping a bit, I was quoted about $700 for labor to swap out the trannies. I think I'm going to drop off the newer trans a few days early and ask them to look at it beforehand and make sure the syncros and gears are in good condition before having it installed...

if the other gears are fine then you can get away with just replacing the bad syncro. but that could backfire and another one might start going soon after you have just the one replaced. I would advice that when the mtx is pulled that they check all parts in the mtx and replace anything that is out of spec.

and $600 for everything? does that include pulling the mtx? if so that is one hell of a deal, but at the same time I would be scared because the price is so low that they might not know what they are getting into.

yea 600-650 for taking the tranny out and to replace 3rd and 4th snycro. and he said that while its out he will check the 1st and 2nd ones and if they are bad then he said he will let me know. he said the 3rd and 4th syncro's usually cost around 270$ and the rest is labor.
* also i thought about gettin a new clutch while its out. he said that he wouldnt charge me really anything for labor sence the tranny is out already. he said it would just cost like 50$ for resurfeing the fly wheel and then how ever much a new clutch cost.
so i figure the new snycro's and the new clutch for like 1000$ and if my first and second look bad then an extra like 270$.
i have had a couple of people say that all my other gears are fine its just the syncro couse if u "double clutch" and baby it into 3rd then i dont get any grinding. i just want to get this fixed but money is horrable right now.
All advice giving to me im very thankful!

I'm not too pleased with the ford honey. During winter time/cold freezing temps if I don't warm my car up for a good ten minutes, when you go from first to second when your shifting you can feel that it wants to grind but it doesn't. Once all the fluids are warmed up the problem goes away. I'm thinking I need to start saving up for a new trans

Royal purple doesnt have that issue. My trans shifts nearly the same when its cold or warm, its a little notchey when cold, but butter smooth when driven for about 2-3 minutes.
