ok so yesterday in my town we had our first snow storm, and it was a nice one about 12in. anyway, i had to do some x-mas shopping and tryed driving threw the snow anywayz, when i started my trip everything was fine, i was nice and toasty, but then i started to get cold, and realized that the blower wasnt working on any speeds, so i immiedietly ruled out the resistor, cuz it would still work on high, so i checked the fuse, it was fine, the relay i swapped with another of the same, still nothing. its too cold to work on the car for now, but can i just get a vote before i start on who thinks its probly blower is broken. i allready get a new one, but just figured id see what u guys thought before i started this cuz im bored stuck inside untill the snow stops. thanks -Tom

does the abs work? if the use under the hood is fine then the motor could be the issue. I would check the hvac controls themself to make sure everything is ok also.

no, my abs doesnt work, ????
but the controls are the first thing i will check once this damn snow stopps, its been all weekend

the hvac and the abs share the same fuse in the power distribution box under the hood. its one of the larger, I guess you would call it a bus fuse. it is 60 amp and is bolted in. might be a dealer only part.

ok, but what does the abs have to do with no heat. i know why my abs light is on, theres a broken sensor

many people have had the problem where the abs blows the fuse. when that happens it takes teh hvac out with it. so make sure the fuse for the abs/hvac is good.

If the abs fuse isn't the culprit,it could be the interior fuse panel,my panel has some loose wires that go to the hvac controls,i just hit it and it worked fine, doesn't fix the problem, but yea lol check your fuse panel for loose wire in the back

it was the fuse number 3. sorry i didnt understand before , it was because i didnt have access to my car till tonight. AllData sucks, i looked up on the blower motor, and it didnt say anything about the number 3 fuse for the blower, it only told about the fuse in the interior fuse panel..
thanks guys..

any idea why the fuse wud be blowing? i do have multiple ABS problems if that makes a differance

don't know if anyone has pin pointed a cause. but it always seems to be in the winter time so I would say heavy use of the abs and hvac or some other issue in one of the systems. maybe the bad wiring in the 98 is partly to blame?

My 95s blower quit a few years ago, turned out to be the main fuse that runs the entire HVAC system. IIRC it is a 20 amp next to the bottom right of the fusebox. It melted the holder and stopped making contact. I ended up adding an aftermarket heavy duty fuseholder and hard wiring it in because the next summer it melted again. Wasn't designed to draw that much current for that long. VW had this problem with their electric fuel pump fuse. Hot weather here worked the systems harder and no place for the heat to go.

no, theres a 60A fuse under the hood that powers the abs and blower motor. and then a 30A in the interior panel. im sure that ford designed it poorly and cant handle drawing that much power for extended periods of time like you ^ just said. what also makes me think this is because it seems to happen more in the winter from what Brapple said

if you have multiple abs issues then with the heavy snow you are using the brakes constantly, this will put power to the abs system and it may blow a fuse... it was probably a one time deal with a high milage car, something over 100,000 miles. i had the same issue with my car, the first thing i checked was that fuse and it was fine, long story short it turned out to be a horrible design of the blower motor.

In my case My resistor pack, the harness for the pack, and the blower motor, and connector all melted. The blower was also drawing too much current. After replacing the resistor pack and pigtail and a aftermarket blower all is good. However I don't have ABS in my 98, that does sound like alot to pull threw one branch, wonder if it would be worth it to rewire it...

Sounds like the blower motor resistor. It still works on high because the resistor sends all the current when the selector is on high (e.g. nothing to resist). The resistor only comes into play when you want one of the lower fan speeds. This should be inexpensive and easy to change and I bet you a $1 that's what it is LOL.

This may seem like a really stupid question, but how the heck do I remove the #3 fuse from the engine compartment fuse panel. It is blown and need to get a new one. I assume this is a Ford part??

you pull it out with any kind of small pliers and put a new one in. they can be found at any parts store

fuse #3 is one of the large 60 amp fuses that are bolted to the wiring harness.

iirc the panel comes out so you can assess the screws.

dealer only? maybe. might see if someone local to you is parting a car or go to a junk yard.

whoops! i thought larger fuses were higher numbers. my bad!

actually just blew this fuse this morning so probably replace it tomorrow if i have time... otherwise no heat for 3 1/2 hour drive home. It is not hard to get out and replace at all.
