Hoping to rebuild my MTX-75

In January this year I bought my '98 SVT. A week or so after buying it, I noticed that the speedometer was off (by 10 MPH, I determined). A few months later in May or June, the speedometer completely quit on me, so I decided to bring it to my mechanic. He stuck a borescope into the transmission and said that the "drive gear" isn't spinning. I personally have no idea under what conditions he tested it, but I believed him (now I'm not so sure).

Does anyone know anything about this "drive gear," it's location (hell, confirming it isn't made up would be a start), or how to fix it if it's possible?

I was reading over unisys12's MTX-75 Upgrade How-To thread in a link I found and I can't distinguish in any of the pictures what my mechanic might be talking about. If anyone has a picture, I'd appreciate an arrow pointing me in the right direction.

With my recent thoughts of a future 3.0L swap, I want to know that I'm going to have a transmission that's up for the task. I'd like to do the full upgrade with the Torsen 2.0 but if I can't figure out a way to resurrect my speedometer I guess I'm going to have to lay down the money for rebuilt tranny. I refuse to get a 3L ready to drop in just to find out that my transmission is a POS. Gotta get my speedometer back soon--It's driving me nuts.

All ideas are appreciated. Thanks for reading.:help:

Afterthought: I remember the mechanic saying that the speed sensor plugs into the "drive gear."

Second Afterthought: Removed by moderators due to forum rules. Please review them (rule #12, specifically) I'm getting this :censored::censored::censored::censored: fixed when I get my refund if not before--come Hell or high water.

I would get a second opinion. I haven't heard of the gear or the drive gears for the VSS failing. most of the time when the speedo fails it is because of the VSS. do you have a cel?

bet it is a P0500, P0501 or P0503 since your speedo isn't working.

Sure enough. P0500 @ autozone. The funny thing is when I disconnected the battery the other day for a little while, when I started the car, it didn't display the error until the 4th or 5th time I started it up and drove it.

(The reason I disconnected the battery the other day was because my RR break wasn't working, but that's another thread.)

I don't know if that makes any difference or not. Who knows? I know desktop computers, not car computers.

change your speed sensor they usually cost around $25-$35 and when I had my engine/trans out I checked on the speed sensor to see how hard it was to change and I have to say other than getting to it it is a peice of cake it is plastic and just unscrews (on the 2000SVT) it is right above where the passenger axle goes in you may be able to unscrew it with out removing anything I'd check for the plug from up top in back below the EGR.... good luck .....if changing out the speed sensor doesn't fix it you'll know that the drive gear is bad which is unlikely....

well to check the gear all you need to do is remove the vss. then there is a pin on the side of the case that retains the bottom part of teh vss setup which has teh gear on it. pull the pin and pull out the gear and look at it.

its typical of the vss to have the wires degrade and the isulation crack right where they enter the vss.

Appreciate the help. Broke from Christmas right now, so I'll be doing it next paycheck unless I get some sort of $ on the 25th.
