Racing seat install, Help!!!!

I trust rara, I just think people get a little paranoid on the whole "saftey" issue

and I do know what he's saying about roll bars too, I've flipped a vehicle, and belive me, a roll bar would have been mostly good for hitting your head on, though it would have kept the roof more... roof like

they make padding for roll bars though....

You have ZERO concept of the level of forces involved in a crash do you?

The padding intended for roll cages is extremely dense and stiff, and is designed to be used in conjunction with a helmet to avoid serious injury to the person when the helmet strikes the cage. Anything less stiff will be useless regardless of what hits it, and even the stiff stuff won't help against skull fractures or serious brain injuries if no helmet is used.

Its futile Rara to explain such things. Some just wont ever get it.

I do have some Corbeau seat brackets in my possesion. Though I would like to modify a good seat to fit the stock tracks. Supposedly Recaro seats are the best aftermarket provider for safety.

It's like trying to explain the auto industry to a senator from Alabama.

Recaro and Sparco are the only ones that crash test thier seats on a regular basis, and are OEM suppliers to vehicles that get crash tested regularly. Sparco tends to be used on more of the exotics, which they do as little crash testing as possible on because of cost, but Recaro is used on a lot more higher volume "sporty" apps that get more testing. To make a long story short, yeah, I think you're right :D but Sparco isn't too far behind Recaro, while the rest are a long ways back.

how many cars have you flipped?

how about running into the end of a guard rail at 70 mph with the cruise on?

and this "safe" ford oem interior has a steering wheel cover that put my bottom teeth through my lower lip, oh, and the air bags didn't deploy, yeah, thats awesome, roll cage padding couldn't possibly be softer than that right?

I know it is, I've felt it in my friends GT 'stang track car, and a roll cage sure would have been nice for the acrobatic dyplay from the ranger

Is that really something to be proud of:shrug:? Oh and yes I would still take Rara's word seeing as to how is very knowledgable with engineering and has a race team.

my point wasn't bragging on falling asleep driving or flipping a truck, and it also wasn't to claim I knew more than rara, it was only that I'm pretty sure I have a good idea of what goes on inside a car during a wreck, in answer to his question.

and it's not like I'm saying for everybody to put lawnchairs in their car, I'm just saying if faulty race seats caused a lot of fatalities, we'd hear more about it in general, rather than just the ponderings of people who personally havent had one fail on them.

in other words, I'll believe cheap seats are deadly when a guy who's had one fail on him turnes up saying so (or a guy that knew said guy, if he died in the wreck)

know what I mean?

I see what you mean, but at the same time can you really put a price on safety? I would rather spend the extra money on a seat I know is quality and has a good reputaion/safety standards instead of buying a cheap seat. But hey that's just me and the way I see it "you gotta pay to play".

Aaron

why would you risk it? dont be cheap when it comes to things like this. the pep boys special seats are CRAP. friends of mine had them. i thought about getting them once too. after seeing them inside and out, i would NEVER trust one. if you're gonna buy a cheap racing seat for looks, get a seat cover. girls dont know the difference.

no doubt, I may or may not wind up with janky seats, depends on money when I get to it, and whether I can find something I like in the european section of the junkyard or not.

SVT seats look nice, besides only coming in wierd colors, and being heavy as balls.

another thing to note, is earlier in this thread, somebody was talking about DIY welding of seat rails.

personally, that seems less safe than a possibly poor quality seat back latch. I'd rather have the back fall back, than the whole friggin seat fly out the windscreen!!! hahahaha, omg

[edit] forgot to ask about the M5 lip on your car, how does that look? I've seen a bunch on e-bay and wondered about the proportions to the contour.

Was that directed at me? If so there are different sizes you can get. I decided to get the actual BMW size which is actually less wide then our trunks. I know Tony (CSVT1124) got one that was wide enough to go go teh whole width of the trunk. Personally I prefer the slightly shorter lip spoiler as opposed to having it be the whole width of the trunk. Oh and the CF was a pain to get form to the shape of the trunk lol. I have pictures if you would like to see. I originally was going to buy the urthane one but decided to buy the CF since nobody had one :)

yeah, lets see it

and the whole resone I'm looking at seats is for the bolstering, the cloth se seats are light but they provide no lateral support

eah, the leather ones

but I like the look of the SVT seats over those

and the english ST seats over those

I wonder if the recaro's from a ion redline or something like that could be adapted to work for us, that would be nice
