Does anyone know when the last PRE98 diff was blown?

No one ever posts if or when a pre98 diff blows, but the SVT ones are dropping like flies.....

We really need to get an understanding of how tough the pre98 diffs are compared to the post98s. I havn't opened my stock '95 trans yet that has 212,000 miles on it but I think it will be in great shape.
I have dumped the clutch at the track at 175,000 miles and learn how to drive stick on this trans since 90,000 miles and it has never been a thought in my mind that it would someday blow through the trans case.

We just keep on seeing "I blew my diff" threads and if we can save these car owners some $ and help get their car back on the road, I would part with mine too for super cheap. I don't want to post it for sale knowing possibly that it is just a grenade waiting to go off like the post98 diffs.

Lets get a discussion going on this.

I know my 95 was up to over 200K miles as well with the original tranny not being touched. A couple of launches with moderate wheel hop too.

I beat the :censored::censored::censored::censored: out of mine. 241K miles and the diff still looks perfect. I would not hesitate to put a pre98 diff in as a cheap solution, especially for those who just want to keep it stock and get the car back on the road.

^That's what I was thinking. If you're just running a stock 2.5 and no power adders, then I deem it as a viable option for sure.....

I have no way to confirm it, but I think they were probably carried over into early 98's.

When I removed the diff from my 98 SVT, it was in mint condition. Not a single mark or chip on any of the gears. I abused that crap out of that diff when I first bought the car before I knew anything about it being a weak point.

You can pick up a used pre98 transmission with low miles from the yard for $150. I have one sitting as a spare.

They are not interchangeable unless you grab the shifter/rod/and all the other pre98 V6 MTX shifting components. Probably easier to change your car from cable to rod shift than to modify the pre98 case to work with cables.

really don't think the case can be modified to work either ....

Kinda confirms that the 95-97 diffs gears are stronger, but the "X" shaft seems to be the weak link. I havn't heard of an "X" shaft going before either......

OK,so you have an MTX75 and the diff has blown. You don't want to pay for a Quaife or a Torsen because you don't need it.All you need is a new/good used diff unit that will last. You don't have a 3.0 or a tuned SVT etc.Well some of the Ford diffs are now obsolete.Moral here is MTX stoc diffs can be interchanged. We have stocks of the 95>97 'stronger' open diffs, all used but in good condition...But what about a bit stronger than that?
Well now we have this:-
*On Hand stocks of the current Ford of Europe MTX75 'open' diffs..NEW
*These have *Thicker / uprated planet gear cross shaft(see pic)*Latest level uprated diff gears*
*Are supplied with NEW diff bearings pressed on and outer races(YOU or shop MUST set preload shimming when fitted)*
*New speedo drive gear(Note if you have a Focus or later trans that has a trigger wheel Vs the conventionl gear you will have to swap them*
This can save you a bit if you want to save cash on your trans repair.Pic is below and price etc is in the classifeds....
