hey guys, so i was thinking, what is the differances in the svt cams and non svt cams. Are BOTH, the intake and exhaust cams different on the svt or just the intake?

im asking this because im going to be doing a svt uim,lim swap soon, and thought about cams as well..

so wud it be a good idea to put them into my non svt? any modifcations required? how much of an improvement would there be?

yes they can be installed in a non-svt. to get there full potential you will need a SVT pcm and injectors or a tune.

just make sure your engine has the same chain style as the svt cam. it should unless its a real late 00.

question... what happens when you mix&match svt/ordinary cams for intake/exhaust ect...?

nothing good is all I can guess. why would you want to do that anyway?

one person that I know of did something like this. DanG iirc used mazada exhaust cams either with stock or SVT intake cams. he ended up swapping them out, I believe for a complete set of SVT cams. But this was also for a ADC turbo kit installed on a cougar.

don't the svt cams have higher lift and longer duration lobes ? If you put just the intake, for example..wouldn't you get more air in but not give the engine enough time to exhaust the gases ? Maybe DanG was trying to get more air in with the more aggressive mazda cams (and added timing) without the added overlap.??..G.

i think the inlet is vvt but the exhaust is more aggressive. Don't quote me on that..ask DanG. I think Dan was looking for more power for his turbo setup..G.

whats the deal with the mazda cams?

The Mazda exhaust cam is pretty close to the specs of the ST220 exhaust cam, meaning it is pretty aggressive. It doesn't surprise me that it didn't work as well for a turbo car since mild turbo setups don't like a ton of overlap.

Never thought about it, but I would bet there is something to gain from mixing cams based on the complete set-up. I know the 4V 4.6 cams can be interchanged and are so even from the factory based on application (Mach, Cobra, Navigator).
If Rara or one of you guys with details on the particulars of the factory cams used in the different Duratecs wanted to try, I'd bet you could use a different mix to maximize a build. It would take a lot of information and knowledge to pair them correctly with a builds combination (intake choice, heads, displacement, FI or NA, wanted powerband), but there theoretically should be power to be gained.
It may not be worth the effort in the end, but possible.

turbo set ups in general don't like a lot of overlap, besides, most of the svt overlap is from the "duration" on the intake cam, but it's not really durration as much as overlap between two stagered intake lobes, so the benefit of this "duration" is negligible.

any predictions on the performance of mazda exhaust cams with 3l intake cams? which year intake cams are best? I thought they were the same, but hearing otherwise.

or am I correct that the extra lift in the later 3.0 cams is from RFF Ratio?

ahh, I wasn't sure, I'd read some of both, but wasn't sure on the actual conclusion.

so is the conclusion that there is no difference, and it was a clerical error in the ford paperwork? ie, se 2.5, 02 3.0, and 04 .0 intake cams are the same?

oh... hold on, I'm about to ask a stupid question.

the vvt, does it stand out too far to just weld it and run it? I've never seen the vvt on an internal chain timed engine, only on belt timed engines.
