HUGE CALIFORNIA street racing bust!

HELL YEAH, POWER TO THE POLICE!!!!!

I am all for crushing the cars of street racers, teach them :censored::censored::censored::censored: heads that racing belongs at a track not on the street. Additionally, anyone busted for street racing should loose their driver's license for LIFE.

Maybe all of those cops should put their time into something a bit more useful, such as cracking down on drunk drivers, responding to accidents, etc which i've had first hand experience in seeing they take an eternity to show up for, and spend a little less time worrying about a few hondas spinning their wheels.

You're saying that you've had experience with the twelve police departments involved being slow to respond to an accident? Or that your few experiences in someplace completely different paint an accurate picture of police work across the country?

They had an opportunity to crack down on blatantly illegal activity, save lives, and catch thieves. They'd be stupid not to take it.

spend a little less time worrying about a few hondas spinning their wheels.

When those Hondas in question speed recklessly and endanger other innocent lives I'd say its enough of a problem for the police to deal with. The added fact that these types of groups are known for organizing and dealing in stolen car parts makes it worth their time as well.

Wow, what a narrow minded opinion. Lets bear in mind that drunk driving kills a whole lot more yet you think all this should happen to street racing. Street racing is a class 1 misdemeanor, as is Driving under the influence. So then why do the cars get crushed for street racing and not drunk driving? If you lose your license for life from street racing you should lose it for life for DUI too.... or perhaps you think street racing(presumably while sober) is worse than drunk driving.

Don't be silly - LAPD will never respond to an accident, unless there's damage to public property or someone needs an ambulance. I know this from when my Escort was totalled by an uninsured driver - as opposed to the time I called 911 and got a busy signal.

On the flip-side, I too don't understand this apparent support for illegal street racing. While it's not the highest causse of fatalities, it is dangerous and stupid, particularly in this pseudo-organized setting.

I see both sides of the argument. That many people getting together to race, your asking for it. Sucks about the spectators tho.. or some poor guy who is trying to get though but all the ricers blocked the street.

I occasionally have to go back in to work at night, and come back home between 1-3am. I ALWAYS see drunk bastards on the freeway... but I NEVER see cops. I'm averaging 1 call to 911 each time I come home (sometimes never, sometimes multiple times). I shouldn't have to do their job! But since they won't, I feel that I should. The government would rather put up stupid cameras to make money, than put cops out to catch actual threats.

Yeah, it sucks that street racers kill people. They're usually idiot ricers doing it around busy areas. It also sucks that slow drivers and the elderly kill people (more than street racers, btw). It also sucks... blah blah blah. Add up all of the non-DUI related fatalities, and it won't come close to how many deaths are related to drunk drivers.

well since this thread is about a street racing bust, how I feel about drunk driving is not the issue here.

However, since you seem so intent on making the discussion about drunk driving, I will point out that I never said anything about drunk driving being less important. I am in full support of strict enforcement of drunk drivers as well. Although, the enforcement standards I believe in for drunk driving are slightly different than street racing. It is my position that driving with alcohol in the system should not be punished until harm is done and at that point the first offense penalties should be the permanent loss of a driver's license, a fine of 10 times the replacement/new value (which ever is greater) for all property damage paid to the property owners, and direct retribution for any bodily harm: eye for eye, arm for arm, life for life.

The primary reason for my difference in opinion for street racing punishment versus drunk driving punishment is that the punishment needs to also function as a deterrent. I believe that my punishment guidelines will be most effective for the target violators; adults (drunk drivers) will be most deterred by the thought of loosing everything they have worked for, whereas street racers (largely teens and twenty-nothings) will be most deterred by the threat of loosing their independence.

For the sake of full disclosure, I would support using my drunk driving punishment for street racing in place of car crushing.

Saying drunk driving should only be punished once damage is done is utterly ridiculous. Lets not do anything until someone gets killed or maimed!.. and on that same note, seeing as DUI and street racing are equal charges, maybe street racing shouldn't have anything done about it until he/she wrecks the car.

So long as we're at the height of ridiculous punishments/deterrents, perhaps we should insist that stealing should be met with lashings and then the amputation of ones hand(s) for repeated offenses.

I think you might feel more at home in Singapore.

Technically, that is the only method of enforcement that passes strict legal scrutiny, but our nanny state government would never have the courage to actually stand up against groups like MADD and only punish people for doing harm.

Hence, my full-disclosure statement. The proper way to punish either would be strict punishments in response to real harm. However, as long as our broken system operates unjustly, the system should at the very least utilize punishments that will actually accomplish something.

The obvious difference between your suggestion and mine is that mine calls for accountability and retribution, lashings and amputations for theft are not retribution. Charging a thief for the value of stolen goods is retribution, charging a person for property damage is retribution, taking an eye for an eye or life for life is retribution.

Really shortsighted logic. How do you do that when the offender has no resources? Are you going to squeeze blood from a turnip?
