That is exactly why i bought the SVT. when i was looking for a DD so i didnt have to drive the "racecar" that was my turbo Zetec every day, i looked at lots of vehicles that were comparable to the SVT. I had narrowed the list down to 3 things, SVTC, 1.8T Golf, Speed Protege. while i really wanted another turbo 4 i went with the SVT because it was half the price of the other 2. of course, its good looks and great handling and my prior knowledge of how to work on the car was a push towards it as well.Great all around performance for a spectacularly cheap price.
The funny thing is, SVTs have two shallow ones.I normally jsut use the deaper one on the drivers side for my drink, havne't had a problem with it yet. Any passengers I tell them they can put their drink in the shallower one if they keep their hand on it at all times, or they can jsut hold it. Haven't had a problme iwth that yet either. I noramlly keep change in the shallow one though.

I did a photo comparison of SE versus SVT cupholder inserts a few years ago. These pics are both of the left cupholder.

You have the smoker's package / "updated cupholders." I believe it was also standard for 2000 model year, not sure.
My SVT has the updated cupholder with ashtray. The ashtray is actually extremely useful: it has a fliptop door and is removable, so I keep all of the leftover Contour screws from various parts (especially the interior swap) in there. Depending on my mood, it resides in the cupholder or in the trunk.
What cup holders are those? Both of my SVT's have had the big unit that goes in to both holders at the same time. I am guessing I have the updated holders. I have never had an issue with the ones I have but the ones you show, I can see how those would suck.
i love that some mods you can do require you to go to the junk yard and get peaces off of older contiques or other ford cars, so you can make your contique look and work better!!
I, too, have the updated, one-piece cupholder that you've got. All these folks that complain about the other cupholders just don't know how we roll!
you haven't had a Citroen apparently. The seats in my '95
absolutely right!Favorite thing is that you can buy them for about half what the same year Japanese car would cost. And usually in better condition too.

... the availability of a V6 with a 5spd, so few cars in North America so equipped.
