I have a 99 se with the 2.5l v6. I have had this noise for awhile now. Its coming from the timing chain side of the engine. It sounds like the chain is loose and is slapping against the cover. It sometimes goes away though. The higher the rpm's the more it goes away. I've been bad about trying to get it fixed and hoping that it would just go away on its own. "Knowing its not". Now my engine is making a loud knocking noise on the top of the engine. Its coming from the back side of it. It goes away under heavy acceleration too. Both noises are sometimes unheard completely then they come back. ITs so loud that I can hear it going down the road at about 25 mph sometimes with the window up. The motor runs phenominal. It has plenty of power and it doesn't miss what so ever. Doesn't burn any oil at all. It has 66,000 miles on it. It seems like it just started an oil leak at the front of the oil pan under the crank pulley. I don't want to replace this engine already. Damn I just bought a new fusion and I don't see that I can afford an engine right now. The gas mileage is great. Its getting 27-28 mpg highway. If it didn't make those noises the car would be perfect. I love this car. It feels so good. Can any one help me with this problem? Has anyone ever changed the timing chain tensioner themselves? Please. this is my everday driver. Need help before it completely blows

Man that seems like alot of work. I was hoping it would be easy. I wouldn't want to have to pull the engine for all that work but damn it seems like I wouldn't have a choice. I wonder what ford would charge me to replace the engine and what kind of warranty they have with new engines. It really sucks that this engine makes this noise !!! I pray everyday that it doesn't blow up on me.

Those chains iz bad when ya’ll hear da thang grinding ya’ll can get some carbon fiber chains ta replace da timingbelt an’ youll gain some martin luther jr. feelin’ then ya’ll can get aftermarket nos on da intake with a purge blower kit on da windshield noz

My car has the same noise. Exactly as yours, coming from the top of the engine. But, I chat with a CEG member in person, to ask him about this, and he told me that the problem could be below the engine and not above.

He tolds me an easy way to check if is the timing chain or something else. He tolds me to take off the Oil pan, and check if there is metal in the pan. If there is metal in the pan, then, the rod bearings could be worn, if they still exists.

I'm gonna do that this weekend, so I hope not to find anything, because I prefer to change the timing chain tensioners that messing with rods and related parts. Hope this helps you.

Its in the shop today. Hopefully they tell me something good. It sounds really bad now. I don't believe its the rod bearings though. It doesn't do it all the time. It usually stops when the engine is revved. Now its making noise at all RPM's. Its really loud now. Good luck to you!
