radiator fan replacement

I need to replace the Fan assembly on a 95 Duratec. The book says the radiator and fan come out as an assembly. Is that really necessary? I have the fan assembly disconnected from the radiator but it doesn't fit between the upper chassis frame and the engine and A/C hose. Don't see how the thicker radiator/fan assembly would be any easier. Does it come out the bottom?

It comes out the bottom. My neighor told me he pulled his out from the bottom without pulling the radiator, but it wasn't easy. I wasn't there to see how he did it.
