So my brother was driving his SVT the other day, apparently it driving fine, next thing he went to change from 4th-5th and it would not go into gear, so he pulled over and his friend PUSHED it into gear (he said it was really hard to get into gear) After that they drove the car home, but on the way they said it just stopped moving, like the car would free rev as if the clutch was pushed in.

So they got it towed home, i took a look at it, clutch seems to be fine because the pedal feel seems the same, the Pressure plate is still working for sure. Car shifts fine, linkage is connected to the trans and the shifter, so its not there. The trans feels easy to put "into gear", goes into the gates fine. Now when i put the car in first, or any gear, the car will move, like you can push on it and it will move, so its not really in gear.

Is this the shift tower bolt? Or is it the clutch? Diff?

The trans case is fine, no noise out of anything, no noise when you clutch in, or out, or move the shifter(only the regular sounds)

Probably Broke the shift tower Bolt... 1 of 2 that break.
I have also seen the plastic Square inside the top of the tower break.
8mm head 24 thread pitch bolt IIRC

That wouldnt really explain why it drove fine then just started to free rev would it?
I somehow do not agree with that, there are steel balls and springs on shifting linkages in the gearbox which keep the gear engaged ( I have not opened contour gearbox but have seen in some other cars) so if something is broken especially when you accelerate the engine (like uphill driving), the gear can easily disengage and you do not feel it. the gear just comes out and engine revs.

Is there any way to check the linkage without removing the tranny? Or is this another hindsight in ford design?
