can i use the 3L water pump housing for a 2.5L water pump, or can the whole 3L pump assembly be used. i've got a 3L heads and 2.5L uim/lim, and svt cams
I do believe most use the waterpump that comes on the 3L engine. I mean why not, it should have less miles. and in the case of a 04/05 engine the main coolant passages are larger in the block and the output of the pump.
BrApple suggested I use the 3L pump for the same reasons. If you want a servicable belt system like your 2.5L was with the tensioner pully, you can just transfer the pully arm over to the 3L one like shown here:
2.5L pump on left with tensioner removed
3L pump on right with 2.5L tensioner installed
All the mounting points for the two pumps are the same and there is no modification needed to use the 2.5L tensioner on the 3L pump. All you would need to keep from the 3L hoses is the big one that goes into the top of the block, as it is shorter than the 2.5L one and the ID of the hose is bigger .
