Alternators for V6 (more than one model?)

Hi all, just called the wreckers looking for a used alternator for my '98 2.5 V6 Tour.

He told me that he has one, but that his computer lists 5 different "kinds" of alternators (all same amp.) for that year/model/engine size.

Ford parts says that only 1 exists for that year.

Which is correct?

Will the one the wrecker has fit my car no matter what?

Buy a brand new Ford alternator. The hassle of a bad alternator is not worth it for the V6 Duratec.

depends, I have been very lucky with my junkyard alternator, but now that there is some oil leaking onto it in th eheat it will drop voltage, not alot but some ... but i do agree, for the least hassle get a new OEM one ...

Yeah, that is what I thought too. I have a 98.5, all the O2 sensors are from 98, so I got a 98 alt. guess what? Doesn't plug in. The voltage regulator plug was different. The 99 Voltage Regulator fits fine though. If you check Autozone, they have two different parts listed for the 1998 and lowers and the 99 and higher as well... I love my Countour... I really do....

ok, so how did my father and I install a alternator from a 95 into a 99 :shrug: it was plug and play ...

and how did I install a 98, iirc alternator into my 99 from a mystique ...

I quit trying to guess what they have done when they built these cars. All I know is the 98 I bought from AZ didn't have the right plug on it... then again, maybe AZ sold me the wrong one?

I would believe that more ... I don't think the late 90's mustang alternator is to differentin the casting


but I know what you mean by guessing why they did what they did when building these cars ...
