Anyone else enjoying the heat and humidity?
run.gif

My school district is closing early today and tomorrow because of the heat. Most of the buildings do not have A/C. Only a few locations in the building are actually cooled. My office being one of them. :)

These classrooms in this building are seeing temps of 110+ degrees and no air circulation but cracking open a window and letting in 100 degree air.

Our graphic dept has its own A/C unit but the one for the rest of the office isn't working. So while it's 70* in here, with our fan going, the rest of the place is easily 85* and humid.

When it's 80* and humid at 6:30am there's a problem.

I never had the privilege at my public school system of leaving early because of heat. You're a lucky duck, to say the least.

Love it. :nonono: I ripped the interior out of my car a few days ago, but it's so hot, I can't motivate myself to put it back in. My mom refuses to pay for AC except for her bedroom, so it's just cranking a fan and not moving if possible.

The worst part of all this... right now in NY it's 5 degrees hotter than in Florida, Texas, Louisiana, and Arizona! Common! I might as well live down there and not deal with winter.

We haven't had any A/C in my house in YEARS. We had it for one year, but only on the first floor. None of the windows in the upstairs of the house are big enough to accommodate an air conditioner, even after we tried shopping around a bit! We have two that we were going to sell and try and get one to put in the bathroom upstairs, which never gets used, but we couldn't find anything small enough. Stupid Cape Cod style house! So now I'm sitting here at the computer with no lights on, no shades open with a fan at me, haha. I'm relatively comfortable right now, though, to be honest

I'll be honest, it's the first time I've heard of this. I never left early when I was in school.

I saw some staff emails going back and forth about the heat concern and being dismissed and I thought it was a joke. The superintendent would never go for it. But I guess I was wrong.

They are letting out something like 5 or 6 districts besides ours.

Yeah I'm hating it , we had ductless central air installed in the house last year, the a/c still blows ice cold in the contour after 8 years, the taurus and the explorer are still kinda new so the a/c is ice cold in them no a/c in the stang so I'm not running that in the heat. I'm holding out just fine..in fact I need a sweatshirt in here, I'm a little chilly  .

ugh I remember some rough hot days back in high school. I think one day was 102 and no way in hell they would let us go.
No a/c.
I wonder if they ever put a/c in after I left there.
There was word that they'd lose their accredidation if they didn't install a/c within a certain amount of time.
No idea what ever came of that.

Ian, they make free standing units to sit in your house, kinda like a dehumidifier. You just need to run the exhaust out a window.
So you'd have to do that and patch up the rest of the window opening.

I grew up without a/c. I kinda wish I never got spoiled by it because I absolutely cannot deal with the heat like I used to be able to.
I thought I was going to die this weekend, and I was only outside for a grand total of maybe an hour.
I was unconscious on Sunday for nearly 2 hours after going outside for 20 minutes. awful

But I still love it more than friggin winter cold!

yeah, not enjoying it at all, luckly the building here is nice.

and I have never heard of being let out of school early because of the heat, I could believe it if it was in florida but not here.

we run two AC's i nthe house, one in our bedroom and one in the red room.
the first flor stays fairly cool, but our room is not insulated and is in the sun all day.

i spent all day yesterday sanding hardwood floors up stairs, it was about 93° on that floor.
i think i lost about 12 pounds.

haha

oh yeah, and my area of the office has no ac, yet 20 feet down the hall its about 20° cooler.
and i sweat like a banshee, so this sucks.

Most of those free standing AC units come with a nifty thing to help mount the exhaust in the window and block it off.
when i worked at the garage we had one, it was great!!

zorrex, there are apartment-style air conditioners. They sit on the floor and have a vent to vent out heat. I don't think they're cheap though.

My a/c sat outside all winter so I need to clean it thoroughly before using. Despite the incentive I have no motivation to do so in this heat. I also need to figure out a way to drain the water because I don't want it raining on my poor neighbor downstairs as she sits on the porch. (My a/c produces excessive water, more than most)

I might stay in the office late today .. if not for work then just to enjoy the a/c.

i wanted to go 2 school when i was in middle school cause it was all a/c and we didnt have a/c at home.. high school was all a/c for the most part... no we have central air in our house so its a nice 72 in her. the pool in the back yard is at about 76:laugh:. but yes the heat suckssss

Yeah Matt you pretty much nailed it. Parents had been looking at that, but given that it had to go in the bathroom, and seeing as the bathroom is a super-tiny dormer (again, stupid Cape Cod style house!), this option was too expensive and too hassle-ish. I mean, we use the bathroom upstairs on slight occasion, but an air conditioner would render it totally useless! And, also, we would have had to redo all the electrical upstairs on a whole new circuit. The electrical in our house is totally effed and for some reason my room is on the same circuit as the kitchen (opposite sides of the house :confused::confused:), and we don't even have a grounded plug in the bathroom upstairs! Stupid house!

It's funny you mention Florida, because I was talking with a girl at work who was going to school in Florida, and I guess all public buildings are required by law to have air conditioning!

they also have what are called split units now. you have the main part outside that has the compressor and such and a wall unit where the air is relased. so it doesn't go in a window but the wall. they are popular for adding a/c permenently to older homes as an option to a central air system.

Don't blame the Cape Cod style, just blame the crappy developer who built your house.

(I love the style and want one eventually ;) )
Both of my grandfathers built Capes with their own two hands. One of them has very large wide front dormers, enough that a desk could be stuck in front of the windows.

There's a thread in the OFT that mentions southern apartment buildings / rental homes are required to maintain temperatures between 60 and 80 degrees at all times. That would be very nice ...

I suppose you're right about the style of house. I mean, if the developer really wanted to he could have put in bigger windows. I don't see why my room has two tiny windows instead of one bigger one? We have a friend who could do some electrical work for us for really cheap, but overall it's still too much of a hassle because we'd still have to get one of those weird floor A/C's...

63 here today. partly sunny.

Yesterday was 79 and sunny as can be. Then we got hit with a low presure system from canada.

they also have what are called split units now. you have the main part outside that has the compressor and such and a wall unit where the air is released. so it doesn't go in a window but the wall. they are popular for adding a/c permanently to older homes as an option to a central air system.

thats the duct-less style that skunk mentioned.
they only need to put like a 3" hole in the wall.
i would love to put central AC in my house, its a perfect candidate having the attic area above the living room with access to all upstairs rooms and the red room for ducting.

anyone wanna give me a few grand? you can come over and enjoy the ac anytime you want
haha
