Shiftcable broke how do i put car in neutral?

I recently bought a 2000 totalled svt contour that I'm trying to fix back up but has a broken shift cable at shifter end. The car is stuck in a gear and not totally sure if the clutch or tranmission is bad. I tired holding the shifter and the cable end together to take out of gear but this is not working.(which is why i think clutch is bad)I am already getting a replacement cable so is there a way to put the car in neutral at the other end of the cables?

If you can get underneath it on the driver side you can see both cable ends on the back of the transmission. Move them both to the middle position and the car should be in neutral.

If you can't get underneath you can also from under the hood, reach the "weight" (can't remember what it's actually called at the moment) on the top of the shift tower and move that until it's in the middle to get it into neutral.

This sounds like it may be a broken shift tower bolt if you can't get it into neutral by hand either...
