I only smell it once in a while, but it's starting to scare me. I checked under the car while it was running for leaks, none. I was thinking for a while it was just from outside, but I've been smeeling it too frequently for that to be the cause. Anyone have simular problems in the past?

The old escort wagon we had did the same thing. The fuel pump seal was bad causing the fumes to go into the cabin. Pull the rear seat out and make sure the fuel pump is not possibly rusted through....

Isn't there a carbon filled storage container somewhere whose job it is to store excess fumes and burn them? Could be that is bad.

I dont remember if there is one on the Contour, but on my cobra there is.

Its commonly called the carbon canister.

I think there is a carbon canister on the Contour as well, as I remember that was one of the part's torn off of Ryan's 3L by the transport company..

I'm pretty sure theres some kind of vapor tank on my tour. right under the trunk. gas lines go to it from the tank. well at least thats what i thought it was for.

there is definately something that would resemble what you guys are talking about. I've been wondering what the hell it was.I thought maybe it was a reserve tank or something. What "extra" gas is it collecting? I thought the cats werre supposed to collect unburned fuel.:help:

My mystique smells too, when you fill it up. It's not too bad if it only gets 10 gal or so. I think I have a cracked/split hose up on top of the tank somewhere. I pulled the rear seat out and checked at the fuel pump area but didn't see anything. I guess the next step would be to drop the tank someting when it's almost empty to check it out.

Based on description "smells after fill up", fuel pump seal is one place I would look first. Fuel sending unit seal ring and top rust out pretty bad on these cars as moisture gets trapped there. Get a new ring an seal kit and change it. If the top of the sending unit is just surface rust it's possible to clean it and paint it. Make sure you mask it properly and don't damage the components. If the rust is bad get it replaced.
