MTX 99 vs 98

Could someone tell me what the differences are between a 98 and 99 MTX in the Contour? I'm looking for a 99 replacement and the yard says they're totally different. The few bits I've found here refer to differences in shifter-end connections is this the only difference?

Also, for those who have changed shifters, is there one that is an agreed-upon "gotta-have"?

Yes, a short-shifter. And thanks for the info on the MTX!

B&M, Steeda, and ebay special(Cosmo racing/canadian seller) I would suggest you have the weld 's reinforced, especially the ebay special.

Nothing worse then having the ball snap off on you during a hard shift
 
There was a change in early 2000 production and the new one holds less fluid. Prior to that, there was the change from rod shift to cable shift between 97 and 98.

The pre 98 and the 98 and later are not interchangeable without a big hassle to change shift linkage. Big hassle, as the cars were not designed for the two styles to be interchanged.

Have you attempted to rebuild one of these MTX's before? If so, how much of a problem is it? Mine has a serious difficulties on the 1-2 and a 3-2 downshift is to be avoided as she'll pop out of gear too easily.

The trans is coming out with the engine (shortly) and I need to either rebuild it or have it done. Any Thoughts?
 
I understand that the internals are essentially the same. Reportedly, the earlier final drive may be stronger.

Terry Haines has reported that there are numerous small internal differences, and that the Ford catalog does not address it well. He has created a spreadsheet (for his own use only) to help make sure that he uses the correct parts when he overhauls this transmission. I have no idea what all of these changes are.
