the dredded check engine light just came on my SVT. I was driving normal like i always do, no hard turns, shifting at 3k rpms, driving fine. I was near empty on gas so i filled up, put 12.5 gallons in. was driving home and noticed the check engine came on! (not sure if it came on during the ride home or as soon as i started it up at the gas station). i did do a slightly hard right turn right before the gas station, but i doubt it would have done anything i was doing about 2500 rpms in 3rd and it wasnt a long sweeping turn.

i have no clue what coulda happend! everything sounds/feels fine. the low amount of gas wouldnt have done anything right? and i would easily hear it if i spun a bearing right? Also i changed the oil a week or so ago and put in 6.5 quarts of oil, could that set off the light?

any input would be great, im so scared!

so it happened after you filled the car up with gas?

Hum... check your gas cap, sometimes people dont properly tighten the filler cap and it throws an EVAP code.

you need to chillax my friend, if the car is driving fine, chances are its an emissions issue, worst case scenario, you need a new O2 sensor. Take the car to autozone or Murrays or Advance auto and ask to barrow their OBD-2 scanner, have them write down the code(s) and post them here.

ok guys so a couple days ago the check engine light went off and stayed off. whats up with that, should i still go and use the OBD-2 scanner? or was it prolly just a fluke?

Alias was right. It was probably the gas cap. Don't worry about it.

Meh, if the CEL is off, don't worry about it. My car is running just fine right now (about 95%), and I got a CEL for running too rich , and it stayed on for a couple weeks. We cleared it and hasn't come back since...If it was really a problem, it would have come back on.

The first time I got a CEL was because I didn't have the gas cap on right. It was 'tight' (ie clicked when I turned it) but I didn't have it threaded right. In the mean time I had corrected the problem (without knowing it was the problem) and had the code cleared.

i dont think so, seemed like it was on right, but i took it off anyway and put it back on after he said that, and the check engine light stayed on for another 5-6 days.

it sometimes take a number of drive cycles to turn the cel off. it could have taken that long to turn off depending on alot of things ....
