New Jersey Inspection

Ok, newbie with the NJ DMV stuff here!

Hopefully by this week, I'll get my Quebec driver license transfered to New Jersey (Damn the DMV in Wayne is so far away...) and I'll finally be able register my new baby! Which is sitting in the garage with her expired temporary registration from Michigan...

Now, to put you in context, in Quebec, you never have to do inspection, except when you import a car. So the only time in my life I had to pass inspection was with my 99 over there, and the car was stock and everything was perfect on it.

No so with the 2000. I spotted a small vertical crack in the windshield under the passenger wiper. Definitely not something that can disturb your vision, but could it be enough to have the car fail the inspection?

Also, since the car is from Michigan, where there's no stupid restriction on tinted windows, I have the upper part of my windshield tinted, and all side and back windows. Nothing crazy, maybe 70% all around, you can still see through them. I know they specify that you can't have front tinted windows/windshield, but I see plenty of cars around here with tinted windows all around, and much darker than mine. Do they check that at the inspection too?

Last thing, I have a Basani  ehxaust, with I believe no resonator. Nothing too loud, but enough to bother me... If the car still have cats, will it pass? I understand that as long as there's no CEL and the emission test are OK, it should pass, but I wanna make sure.
Oh BTW, if I can't find a way to silence that thing down, I may be looking for someone who wants to trade his stock for that heh.

Thanks for your help !

I believe you will automatically fail for the cracked windshield and/or the tints on the front windows.

I am not sure about the exhaust.
It has been a long time since I had a car with an aftermarket exhaust inspected in Jersey.
I believe if you still have the cats and it passes emissions you are good to go.

I suggest to bring it to a private garage that is liscensed to do NJ inspections that will pass you as long as your emissions are good, for a slight extra fee if you know what I am sayimg.

REMOVE the Front and side tints.....

If you need the silencers for the Bassani Tips, I can let you use them to shut up the system for the day to Pass.

I passed with no resonator and the tips/silencers....... Then took em off like 5 minutes later!

What do those silencer looks like? Where do you install them?

Aww it sucks if I have to remove the windows tint, it looks SO much better like this than like it was on my 99... I know my neighbor had to remove it on his Accord, but how come people drive around with that ?

it's all about who you know not how do they do it. Over here in PA a state cop can stop you and will hand you a razor blade to scrape it off

Shoot, that's pretty drastic. It's not like it keep you from seeing outside, but I guess the cops like to see you from outside...

They have some ridiculously tight laws about that, while at the same time people drive around in smashed up Camry, Altima and Civic with a missing headlight, ripped off fender and totally out of alignment wheels, running on 5 cylinders, but as long as their windshield is not cracked, they can run around without any problems.

Any cop can stop you for the tint in PA. The PD's around here don't normally hand you a razor blade though. ;) It's either a five day warning slip or a citation. Most times, if you get a citation, you can have a hearing and show that you removed the tint and get the citation dropped.

We're lucky in the fact that the inspection stations do NOT enforce the tint laws anymore. They used to and then had that part of the law turned over to the State and local PD's to enforce. It remains in the inspection manual even though it is not enforced by the inspection stations.

Etienne, first go to Lodi to get a new license, no need to go so far away to Wayne. Lodi is busy, so be prepared for a wait. Rahway, around me, is a quick DMV, smaller and really fast. They can also inspect the car. The front windshield can be tinted, to the A line. After that, nada. The tint on the front windows must be removed, unless you have a doctor's note. As for the exhaust, I pass every year with just the secondary CAT. No problems at all. :)

Hey Chris!

If it was that simple, I'd gladly go to Lodi, but since I have to transfer an out-of-country driver license, they asked me to go to a Regional center first. After that, hopefully, I should be able to go to a closer place !

Oh thanks for the windshield tip, it's only tinted at the very top, like a normal windshield. We had that standard in Quebec too.

I'm trying my luck today for the driver license, then hopefully I'll be able to move forward with the rest ! I feel empty without my car, even if I rarely use it lol.
