Any experience or recommendations on towing small utility trailers with the V6 Mystique?
Stock suspension OK for light loads, beef it up & how?

Thanks

Mike

Right...the Cat 1 hitch, the only one available for most smaller passenger cars, has a 2000lb tow limit and a 200lb weight limit on the hitch, just interested in anyone's actual experience...

Noticing your listing we have the same car, '95 Mystique LS. Mine has 27K original miles!!! My mother's.

That clears up some things, I thought Mystique LS denoted the engine also.

I got this last summer thought it was a dream with the miliage, but ended up spending 5 months working on it (VSS, plug wires, blah blah blah)

! Could NOT have done it without this forum, thanks.

One interesting thing is that now it is running literally better than new, and I drove it home when new.

The dealer originally and throughout the next ten years never noticed or corrected a #2 plug wire short. Or a low beam headlight problem.

When new I accellerated (with my mother in the car!) now and then to "clear out the carbon" but it never did much and sounded funny. But the plug wire 6" above the plug was shorting to the side. Since the dealer was taking care of things and I wasn't familiar with the car I didn't do anything.

as for towing I don't have direct experience but I figure it would be similar to towing with a tempo which can handle lite loads pretty easily. if you have an atx get an additional external cooler installed.

maybe i can help. I towed a small sailboat with a windsurfer on top from Miami to northern MN with my 95 duratec atx. the whole package weighed about 600-700 lbs including the trailer. The car was also loaded down with a big boat anchor, 2 people and all our junk for a week vacation, and lots of other stuff we were taking back home with us (the trunk was full, bakcseat had stuff in it). The tour did fine, as long as you drive like you have a trailer behind you then you won't have a problem at all. i lost about 5 mpg, but that should bve expected when towing with a car. as far as the suspension goes, mine was sagging but thats more because the springs were shot (the car would sag when unloaded). is long as you dont have much in the back of the car or turnk you will be fine, and if you do just take as much weight off the tounge you can. lots of people frown on towing with the contour but have never tried it themselves. i have towed a few different things and you don't really have anything to worry about as far as my expirience goes if you stay under 1000 lbs. the tranny cooler is a good idea i hear for the atx, I never did it but my car only had 54k on it when i rolled it so I can't attest as to the value of one. However, as with any car tranny, if you are towing it will easliy overheat and if you are going very far i would strongly recommend it (my bro fried the one in his CRV towing from NC to MN). good luck, let me know if you need more help.

Hey you can do it!

That's what I wanted to know basically.

Would just use it now and then, few times/year for lumber or something big but now too heavy.

Or...maybe I'll get a sailboat!

Thanks

Just allow extra stopping distance and try to keep the weight off the tongue and you shouldn't have any problems ;) I haven't personally towed with a Contour but I imagine it would do better than my 4 cylinder 5 speed probe and I towed snowmobiles with that

If it is in fact an auto you want to make sure the fluid stays cool.
