Hi there folks,

I would like to know what the gas mileage of the bigger 6 cylinder Duratec engine is; what's your experience?
I'd driven the four cylinder Zetec Contour, and had great gas mileage, 35 in city traffic, more than 45 mpg on the highway.
I'm now looking for a Contique again, though I consider only the smaller four cylinder Zetec, cause of the gas mileage.
Thnx indeed,

35 in the city and 45 on the highway?! You sure it wasn't converted a diesel or something haha. Sounds extremely high for a zetec. I think most people only get around 35 mpg on the highway.

My untuned 2.5L gets 26 mpg on the highway. Probably could be in the 30-31 mpg with a good tune.

45 is a bit unbelieavable. in a well maint. duratec you should get around what beyonloadedse said

Always had very high pressure in the tires. On the highway, w/ cruise control on and at around 2000rpm, avoiding unnecessary accelerations and breakings, I achieved up to 45mpg (on a trip from Biloxi to Miami). On long trips I always calculated the mpg after each gas stop.
Cautious driving in the city, for example letting the car roll out when approaching a red light, careful acceleration and foresighted driving in general, and you've got 35mpg.

What do you mean w/ a 'good tune'?

The highest I ever got on my stock CSVT 2.5L was 31 mpg highway, normally it got around 23-25mpg with combined city and highway.

I still find that unbelievable for a zetec...

that would mean that from FULL to EMPTY you went nearly 500 miles, I did 36 mpg in my zetec contour doing 65 constantly on a road trip from ann arbor to Cincinatti. that was all highway, cruise control with an MTX. and the gas light came on at 470 miles.

I think there is something wrong with the way you calculate fuel economy.

good tune,as in a well maintaned engine.

incorrect. Good tune meaning having a shop/someone with knowledge of engine management computers adjusting the way the motor distributes fuel etc etc to the engine. In which case, something like this would be needed to be done when you go from a 2.5 to a 3L because the engine computer isnt "tuned" for a 3L motor, its a different set of values. Which is why people can go from say... 200whp to 215whp with a good tune because it helps the engine properly manage its fuel, among other things. The common tool used around here to tune engine management systems is the xcal.

Im no wrench when it comes to tunes, I just know a BASIC amount for it. I'm sure Brapple is going to chime in and say I am wrong because I used one incorrect word or something. But if I am wrong, then someone correct me.

no,what i said was referring to a good tune up...like i said. a aftermarket tune wont do shizzle if your engine has five year old plugs and fuel filter

I'm kinda in the same boat as you brian. I come up alittle short with only 20-21mpg:blackeye:

In the old E0 I would get anywhere from 30 - 35mpg on the long trips.

The 99 I get no better than my Silverado really. 18 - 19mpg in the truck and about 22 or so in the car. It uses less fuel but because of the premium it would cost me about the same.

The best I've gotten was 22mpg on the highway (hint: the cruise control wasn't on). I average 16-19 on the local freeway & city streets. I did increase the average by about 2mpg after my dyno tune... but I've replaced a bunch of stuff trying to better it, and nothing helps. I've since given up and decided it was just my gas pedal that has the issue.

Thats awesome lol. I gave up on trying to improve my gas mileage.

I'm thinking that a 3L might net me better gas mileage.
(making up excuses to just install a 3L)

Yeah right!

bigger pistons/cylinders+more air flow+driven harder= better gas mileage

Somebody's got wishful thinking.
