I was going to work tonight and I was taking a sweeping turn at about 25. I tipped my foot too far in and it downshifted to 1st instead of 2nd and as the surge from the secondaries kicked in I hit a pothole. (The hole was maybe 2-3" deep and when I drove by it later on it didn't look that bad but the area was poorly lit.) There was a huge thunk and the dashboard cracked and my exhuast tone became noticably louder. I looked underneath and revved it to see if I could see any leaks but nothing. It is definitely louder however . When in neutral I can rev it to 4k and everything sounds fine, just louder, but when in gear under load at around 3-4k I have a really loud whistling noise that sounds almost like a turbo spooling. Also when I floor it while rolling(at any speed), the tranny downshifts and the engine stutters for maybe a second then begins to accelerate. This is what worries me the most. Any thoughts? TIA

You need to post mileage and engine. It appears you have an Automatic. You have an exhaust or vacuum leak. Cover the exhaust with hand (wear gloves). Have someone locate the leak near the front wheels. It is most probably a leaking at the joints (gaskets). Or open up the hood and check for broken hoses or leaking hose clamps.

94k duratec auto. I popped the hood and couldn't see anything loose or see any leaks. It seems that it is someone around the bottom of the back bank, right at the firewall. I think I will have to lift it up and wiggle under there and see whats going on.

Found the leak. It's right where the y-pipe meets the flexpipe. It wasn't so easy to spot last night in the dark.

why didnt you wait to day?

anyways, nice find, sounds like a bad gasket, if your exhaust has been apart before it shouldnt be too difficult to get too.
