so this morning i went out to start my car..... All the normal lights came on, fuel pump came on and when i turned the key instead of the nice grum ble i hear grinding and the car wont start. neevr done a starter before, nor had issues with one. anybody know whats going on? car ran perfectly fine at midnight last night. thanks in advance.

I have a how-to written but not posted, my site is down, I might be able to get the file at home and bring it to work and send it, I can't remember if I finished writing it, I believe I did....

the car started. so i elt it warm up, shut it off and attempted to start it but it did the same thing and wouldnt start. so i put it in first witht he car off and sorta pushed it forward and back, the whole car. then the car immedietly started. idk if something i did helped or what. that would be great thanks. i looked on the main FAq for the TSb relating to the starter flywheel but i cant find it. ill search before the search nazis come down

I just did my starter about a month ago. It's a pain to get it off there if the bolts are stuck like mine were so just spray some pb blaster on e. Once you get it off it only takes about 45 minutes to put the new one on. If CSVT_2004 can't find his how-to I'll write a quick one for you if you need it.

I know we had to use some wobble extensions to get the sockets in at the right angles...... I'm pretty sure I wrote it up, I'll check my stuff tonight and have it for you maybe later today, I'm going home after this, then heading over to my other job where there is internet, if I have it I'll try to upload it or e-mail it, Leave me your e-mail address in a PM to me, chances are with the pictures I put in it, it'll be too big to attach to the forum...

Takes me about 30 minutes to swap one but I know what tools to use. The more you do the easier it is. 13mm hinge head gear wrench is your best friend for the front one. Back is easy.

Exactly. It took me about 4 or 5 hours to get it out between running back and forth to NAPA and figuring out exactly how to get that front bolt with enough torque. Only took 45 minutes to go back in. If I had to do it again, it would be much faster.

I think you did not. I have been waiting for a year.

Yeah... I didn't write it yet... I found some pics and videos though I made of doing it.... if only I had internet at home :( the 19th, the 19th, the 19th, god dammit is it the 19th yet!!!! :argh: it's on my "to do" list :) I'm sorry guys, I really wish I had that written.... I hope i made a video of the process, cause I really don't remember exactly what we moved, I know we took out the intake and accordian tube, release the fuel lines and plugged them, pulled the battery box out I think as well.... moved some of the vacuum lines, then used some long ass wobble extensions to get the right angle to get the bolts, I remember the front bolt was the hardest one to get in and out.... just because of where it was at....... I'll have to look over the videos and see if they jog my memory, i know I have a pictures of all the tools we used as well. umm... other than that..... lets see... I have friday afternoon off, maybe I can try and piece together something for ya.....

I wrote this up real quick, but it should get you through it. If I forgot anything someone please tell me! I did the swap a month or so ago so I may have forgotten one or two things, but I'm pretty sure I have everything there.

CSVT_2004, if you want to me to add your pictures to it PM me for my e-mail.

In the meantime... you can probably get your starter to work by tapping/hitting it with a wood dowel or metal rod. When mine began to fail, I carried around the lever from my jack. The starter is pretty easy... just the lack of room makes it frustrating. I think I did mine in about 45 mins with sockets, extensions, u-joints, and wrenches. I might have used a ratcheting wrench too. I have a nice assortment of extensions and u-joints from the header install :)
