Just picked up a Sony CDXGT510 from best buy for 105.59. Figured I couldn't go wrong with that. I am going to have my friend install it for me. I was wondering if anyone has or have heard about this deck, and also what do we have to do when installing it? Do I need to pick up a harness or anything? do we need to bypass anything, and if so, how. Also, will my power antenna only come on during FM/AM play? I hope so. :)

Thanks,
Adam

Seeing as you have a CSVT you'll most definitely have to bypass the amp (you don't have to per say but don't do without it). You'll have to get a harness from BBY or something like that (circuit etc). Bypassing information is all located in the FAQ stickied under this section.

As far as the GT510 it's not too bad of a unit if all you're using it for is to power the speakers. Customers have always liked how those Sony's look in the cars because they don't look to awkward and don't protrude too much out.

Yes, the power antennae will go up with the radio if you hook it up properly. I know with the Sony radios as soon as you turn it to the CD or AUX then the antennae will go down so that's always good.

If you have any questions AFTER you read the FAQ I'm sure we'll all offer our help.

I read the FAQ. Wow that looks like it might be a bit tricky. Is it hard to bypass the factory amp? from what I read it will be kinda difficult. Why do we have to bypass it anyway? I just cant pick up a wire harness from best buy or something and hook the HU directly up?

Thanks,

Adam

You want to bypass it so you're directly powering the speakers. It's just as easy as unplugging a harness and extending wires. It's just like the normal install but you have to unplug a different harness and extend wires.

It sounds 50x better bypassed btw...

Ok then. So I just go to bby's site and order a harness for a ford contour, and go from there.? If I had this installed at best buy or american, would they bypass the amp for me? would they know what they were doing in other words, or would they just run it through the factory amp? I am sorry, but I am not good at this kind of stuff at all!

Sorry, and thanks,
Adam

http://contour.org/ceg-vb/showthread.php?t=18248 the sticky is pretty straight forward

1. It's not that difficult
2. You don't have to bypass it, but why wouldn't you... the amp is almost 10 years old, chances are it's going to die sooner or later and then you'll have to bypass it, Factory amplifier vs new radio's built in amplifier.... new radio is going to have a better, stronger amp than the stock amp....
3. Should be amp bypass harness 70-5514 I believe... or something like that... there are pictures and probably a model number for the harness in that sticky you were reading through...

They should carry it at the store if you don't want to order it online.
Depending on installer... yes and no... if they're being lazy... then they might just integrate it... which would be gay... and stupid... They probably will charge you more to bypass it since it's not technically part of a normal install, unless you get some chump who doesn't realize that.... Personally I would do it b/c it takes me like 5 mins to do it... just get some speed cable and wha la... done...

Deck install from Best Buy:
Deck Install $49.99
Harness $19.99
Materials Fee $5.00
Factory amp bypass $18.00 (equal to 1 custom labor charge)

If IIRC a factory amp bypass is normally $44.99, but I can do it in under 15min which is what labor for bby is.... $18/per 15min of work... so I just charge $18 when I do ford contours w/premium sound.

American will be cheaper, but idk their prices, but just remember if you have it done at american vs bby... look at company size... bby is all over the country so your bound to be close to one if you have issues with your install... vs american were there are like i think maybe 17 or so around the country...

The b.buy near me wanted to charge me $100 for the install. I tried talking to the guy in the audio bay, and he said the only way to bypass the amp was to run new speaker wire to the speakers. He didn't even know what harnesses I needed. I said screw it, and will figure out a way to get it done.

can I use Scosche FD15B to bypass the factory amp? If I can use this harness, what other one(s) will I need?

Thanks,
Adam

Wow.. he's about as smart as the guy that did Mluko's and drilled holes in his a pillars and b pillars to bypass the factory amp... completely not necessary... He's probably thinking of a BOSE system... where the speakers are amped at the speakers not at a central amp.... idiota...

You can use that harness... assuming they still sell it... but you have to use it in conjunction with this harness FDK4B. the FD15B will allow you to send audio from the input on the amp directly to the output... eliminating the amp... but the FDK4B will need to be used in the dash for power and audio. Basically instead of making a speaker extension, you'll be using the amps input wire to output your sound directly to the speakers through the use of the FDK15B. I guess it just depends on how much wiring you want to do... really it's not that hard to use the FDK2B and just extend wires up to the radio cavity... IMO Plus the audio sticky details it out with pictures how to do this whole install......

I purchased a Metra 70-5513 cable, and Metra 70-1770 from eBay to install the radio. I am looking forward to the install. Is there anything else I should know before installing?

Thanks,
Adam

I don't know how you were going to connect your wires, but don't use electrical tape.... use crimp caps, butt connectors, or sauder and heat shrink....

Otherwise the only other thing I would think of is if you want your antenna to go up and down everytime you switch from FM to CD or if you want it to stay up all the time until the radio is shut off....

Blue/White on New radio to Blue in adapter harness == Ant up all the time, except for when car is off obviously
Blue on New radio to Blue in adapter Harness == Ant up when FM on, ant down when CD on

I am going to install the HU on tuesday, but was wondering, when I pull the factory unit out? can I just slide the sleave that came with the Sony in, click it into place, and slide the new HU in? or do I need to screw, unscrew some stuff?

Thanks,
Adam

Nope, you have the right idea with what you just said. Over at work, we actually black marker the front part of that metal sleeve before we put it into kits or cars, that way if your trim isn't perfect you don't see the silver metal as easily. But yeah, slide the factory radio out, probably will be easier to wire all your harnesses up and plug them in before you put the sleeve in, gets to be a little harder to move you hand around in the dash if you have the sleeve in... but then just put the sleeve in, bend the tabs to "lock" it in the dash, plug in your radio, test it, slide er in the dash an make sure she locks in secure, and your all done...

Well today is Wednesday and I finally finished soldering up the wiring harnesses, got it installed, and the new radio installed. let me just say, the sound is soooo much better with the new unit, even with the factory speakers! even though I had the factory cd player, I am glad I did this upgrade, plus the Sony HU looks great in the SVT. Thanks again guys!
