Idle Issues

My 98 CSVT has been doing this for quite some time. Every time I come to a stop, whether the car is in gear or in neutral, with clutch in or out, my RPMS will fluctuate between 500-750, and they have now dropped down to 250 three times. It feels like the car is going to stall, but it never has yet. Any thoughts?

Got to Autozone or Advance. Get the CEL code(s) read and post the exact code(s) here.

sounds like a IAC problem, have the car check for any stored or pending codes first then we can go from there.

Mine does the same. I have not checked the codes recently but I am 98% sure its a bad O2 sensor thats giving me a CEL. I ordered a new IAC from teamfordparts yesterday and I'm hoping it will fix the problem.

Napa wanted 90$ + 5$ shipping, but at teamfordparts I got it for around 65$ + 7.50$ for shipping.

Tony and BrApple: I am just curious, if the issue isn't an IAC valve, what else would cause rough idle and stalling?

I have not recently disconnected the battery, nor have I ever. I just got a job at an auto repair shop, but haven't gotten to scan the CEL myself. One of the mechanics there told me that I have four O2 Sensors in the car, and that they are about 150-200 bucks each. Any thoughts on that? Thanks in advance.

O2 sensors

O2 sensors

There are four if you have a v-6. Depending on where you get them they run about 60 to 65 each. I used the Bosch direct replacement and they averaged about $65.00. Universal that have to be spliced into the wire harness will save about 5.00 each. Hardly worth the savings when you figure how tight the area you work in. It saves 1.25 per splice. The balance of his quote was probally labor and profit on the part. Few tools and jack stands and most people do them by themselves. Good Luck Dan

Is it really cold when this happens?

I'm going to go along with the IAC thing.

Kinda. It has been about 20-40 degrees here (STL, MO) for about the last four months, but we have had several days in which it has gotten to 60 and the car still does it.

Sorry I'm just getting back here now. It's probably not the IAC thing. I have problems when it's colder than -10 f. You are nowhere in that range. Sorry.

Is it pulsing? Kinda like revving between RPMs? If so, it's probably a vacuum line issue. Mine did this, it was a collapsed PCV line.
