Is this a common problem or what? My trunk wont latch and can be opened by anyone atm.

Not common. Check if spring is broken. If not, then try cleaning with some WD-40 or Power lube or something like that. The hook could be not returning to its original position.

you can also check to see if the cable is seized to the open position
Yes, sometimes, it is not seized but if you put something heavy on the cable in the trunk, it might be sitting on the cable and preventing the return of the spring to its original position.

where the cable runs into the plastic part where the latch is at you can take that off and inspect to see if the latch is working fine. like tony said the cable is just laying under the spare tire cover.

there might be something else going on. your latch is held in there by two screws (torx), and if they were not tight enough, everytime as you shut the trunk, the hook part of the trunk would slam into the latch. this could push the latch downwards with several milimiters. what will happen eventually is that the latch will slide downards and when you close the trunk, its hook will not go down far enough to push on the latch's lock mechanism, so it won't lock... if that makes any sense...
so the fix is easy. loosen the latch just a little but, pull it upwards a few mm's, and tighten the screws...close the trunk several times to see if it will lock.
