please explain to me what "four channel abs"

i believe that they all have 4 channel abs and that means it takes input from the four corners of the car.

best I can compare it to is in hs a friends parents had an aerostar with rear wheel abs only and I think it had a lable somewhere stating 2 channel abs

ABS is anti-lock brakes. ABS has bone through a lot of development over the years. Too many configurations to explain here. ABS works by pulsating the brakes in such a manner that they do not allow the wheel to lock up before the car stops, preventing skidding.

Early systems just pulsed the brakes, sort of vibrating the brake pedal. Some of the less developed ones (RABS) only functioned the rear brakes and from only one sensor (one channel). The best ones sense and independently pulsate each wheel (four channel).

If you want to know more, maybe one of the brake engineers can post.

i understand,i was just curious as to why the svt manual states the four channel abs as a feature, but when i read about other contours it doesnt get mentioned. thanks

Yup...my parents [still :help:] have a '91 Aerostar Eddie Bauer and it's got "rear ABS." I never got why they'd go to the trouble of putting in ABS without doing all four wheels...must have to do with them being drums and the rear being more prone to locking, but still...

Rear only ABS was sort of common back then in pickups and similar vehicles that were front heavy biased, to help keep the rear from locking up on weight transfer. My dad's early 90s Dakota pickup has rear wheel ABS.

You're right, 4 channel means that.
