I searched the forums but didn't see any posts with this code: )2 not switching Lean Bank 1.

Has anybody had to fix this one?

Bank 1 is the rear (firewall side) O2 sensor. Your code 172 is similar to a P0171 for a OBDII car. Check that you do not have any vacuum leaks (hoses, loose clamps, etc.). If your O2 sensor is more than 75K miles, you should start by changing that out first.

How to from Duratec Maintenance-Read First.

harrup, is it causing any problems? did it turn the check engine light on?

i have a '95 v6 and got that code once but the engine light hasn't gone on anymore and i don't think it is a problem

95 with Code 172

95 with Code 172

The check engine light usually comes on after I have driven the car for about 15 min which makes me feel the engine must get to operating temp before the problem manifests. Does this bit of info help with the diagnosis?

My feeling is that the light comes on not as a result of engine temperature, but when the computer shifts from open loop to closed loop. At startup, EEC-IV will run open loop, comparing the standard set of values with the parameters being picked up by the cars various sensors. If they match within a certain tolerance, everything's fine, and no code is kicked. If they're out of whack, you'll get one. What you may be seeing here is EEC analyze the cars systems and then find something amiss, as opposed to a temperature related issue.

I like Tony's advice on this one.

95 6cyl Contour Code 172

I did some reading on the old forums this morning & it seems this code is most likely associated with a vacuum leak.

There was also a post that did relate to the fact the I don't get the code until I've driven it for a while, i.e. engine has heated up. Someone was saying that the lower O2 sensors take a while to heat up & register a problem. Anybody can confirm this? Where would these lower O2 sensors be? Are there one or two to replace?

95's (OBDI) do not have lower O2 sensors.

Which oxygen sensor should I replace to get rid of the 172 Code?
Read Post no. 2 again.

I have a '95 V6 also and among other codes the 172 has come up for a year or so. The car runs perfectly.

I have noticed that the CEL comes on less often in very cold weather.

I have the oxy sensors and the pressure controller unit for the EGR; I have learned here those are good bets. But I haven't felt a need to do it yet as its pretty cramped back there in bank 1!

Tony is right. OBD I cars do not have downstream O2 sensors. I have same model but 4 cylinder engine(only One bank) and I have one O2 sensor that is mounted upstream(meaning before the cat.)
Since you have 6 cyl. engine, you have two banks thus 2 O2 sensors both are upstream.

I have had O2 sensor issue several times and I am very familiar with the symptoms. You get no problem at open loop as O2 sensor is not active, then as soon as you get into close loop and riding at cruise speed(around 40-50mph), you would feel engine is missing slightly. It will be driveable but also gives you uncomfortable feeling.
O2 sensors are not so expensive but also not very cheap(around $80). If you know someone with a OBD I scan tool(unfortunately Autozone or Advance Autoparts won't help you they only have OBD II scanners), he can see the sensor data and most likely determine if the sensor is bad or not.

It would be better for it to be an O2 sensor failure than a vacuum leak. Vacuum leak may be a real pain to track down.

Good luck

I guess I got lucky with Autozone as they had a tool they used to tell me why the light was on. They gave me the 172 code but didn't say anything about being able to tell me if the O2 sensor was good or bad.

I'm still not clear on what to do. Which sensor should I replace or both? I take it I have 2 & they are both upstream before the catalytic converter.

Does this O2 sensor perform any function critical to the engine. The car seems to run fine with the check engine light on.

The O2 sensor makes the engine run efficiently. The engine is on a "limp" mode and is probably running rich (mpg will suffer).

95 6 cyl with AT Now Has 2 Codes 172 & 176

95 6 cyl with AT Now Has 2 Codes 172 & 176

This car has had the CEL on with 172 Code for quite a while. Was going to change the O2 sensor but now car has 176 in addition to the 172 Code. Would it help to change both O2 sensors or might this be something else now that both are showing?

172 & 176 Codes 95 LX 6cyl

172 & 176 Codes 95 LX 6cyl

Wanted to let everyone know that I replace both O2 sensors on my car a couple of weeks ago & the CEL no longer is on or comes on. They must have been the problem.

Thanks for all your help with this issue.
