The CEL on my 98 Contour SE Sport went on a week ago. The car has 55,000 miles and the 2.5 V6. At times the CEL was flashing. So yesterday it was running really rough and I took it to my mechanic. He ran the computer on it and several codes came up indicating that 2 cylinders were misfiring.

I have not heard back from my mechanic. I was wondering if anybody might be familiar with what might cause the cylinders to misfire?:help:

Thanks,

G.

most likely carbon tracked plugs and wires.

I would replace the plug and wires.

what where the exact codes?

A bad coil could cause the misfire also. The coil is broken into 3 sections. Each section controls 2 plugs. If one section of the coil is bad 2 plugs misfire. Dan

most likely the problem is going to be the plug wires and not the coil. The coils for these cars are probably the only extremely well engineered piece on these cars.

Here's a real simple test to determine if it is the plug wires. In a dark place (back road, under a blanket with Teddy Ruxpin, in a field or whever) pop the hood and rev the throttle. If the plug wires are arcing to the block, you'll see flashes of light dancing around your engine. Replace with new plug wires and if you ask me which ones, I'd suggest Bosch.

on my grand am I had 2 of the 4 misfire, or just all together turn off even when it was hot in the cabin of my car....computer said it was fuel injectors....I did not buy that , even why the mechanic said it made sense and wanted to replace all 4- for like 800 bucks....turned out it was in fact the computer, so got one at a junk yard or 50 bucks and ran again fine. But I am guessing your is misfiring all the time?

I have been having p0302 codes pop for years. I check the coil several times changed plugs & wires several times because the coil check out close to spec. Finally got tire of screwing around and changed the coil. The car has not ran this well in years. I know that now that I am not getting the P0302 code I am not getting the P0171 & P0174 lean codes either. Been driving it a week with out a CEL. How sweet is that. Dan
