Lighting problem that has come up recently...

Recently, the turn signal/emergency flasher gave out...at least so I thought.

So, I went to get a new flasher. I put it in, and it doesn't work either.

Now, I noticed that my taillights won't work at all, headlights on, brakes applied (only the third brake light turns on). I am under the impression that it's that whole unit under the steering column that may be the culprit. But, I'm not sure.

I only got the car back form the shop (without this problem, unrelated to why it was in the shop) about a month after about a year without driving it (a month in the shop, and $842 later...I even tried information here a while ago, but to no avail. Nothing worked). What should I look for and do before I have to replace the whole unit below the steering column? (How much do one of those things go for anyway?)

Here are some pics of the piece I'm referring to.

Note: the original flasher was put back on (the piece with 8AD503). I'll leave it on for now, until we try something else with it.

.. Will that also solve the dead tail lights?

Thanks for the help!
Hmmmm. I missed that part about the dead tail lights. Check the wiring loom that goes by the (I think) driver side rear passenger seat by the side of the quarter panel. If you have a back seat which folds down, sometimes the folding up and down causes the wiring to get torn up.

I'll check it for good measure. But, the taillights went dead at the same time as when I replaced the flasher. I put the new one in, nothing worked. I put the old one back, and I noticed the brake lights were gone too.

I noticed that in a picture in one of the links you gave, the brake light unit is above the flasher, so I'll take a look if it was something I nudged (it was kinda dark, too, when I was working on it).

Thanks.

And I found out it's a fuse...I'll see if it failed.

DISREGARD. It was a loose connection regarding the tail lights. Those are fine now.

The turn signal/emergency flashers are still dead. I'll go to the dealer when I can to find the flasher. If the flasher don't work, I'll have to get the new unit. $$$

Thanks for the help, folks!

Well, the problem is gone. I ended up getting rid of that godforsaken car. Monkey's off my back. After pouring so much money into that pile of scrap, I'm glad it's over.

But, thanks for the help, you guys. If it werent' for you folks here, I would have gone mad with that car. Thanks for making things livable.
