Good Mechanic for my 3L Project in JAX, FL??

The cams weren't removed. It was a low mileage 3L, good compression, good oil pressure, and it turned fine.

BTW how did the shop you brought the car to come to the conclusion the timing chain was broken? Looks perfectly fine to me unless the other side is broken.

nope, cams haven't been swapped.

The shop that told me the timing chain failed appears to be way off. I cannot figure out why they would tell me the chain was broke when 10 mins they could have done what I did.

After repositioning the rockers back into location, and tightening down the caps, the rockers still dont make contact with the cam. Shouldnt the rockers be held in place tight by the contact of the cam? Any suggestions on repair?

The only reason the rockers wouldn't be held in place by the cams is because the valves are stuck open holding the rockers down. The cams look fine and they are bolted down so that has to be the reason. It's odd because if the timing was off the engine wouldn't have ever turned over, yet it ran fine and you had it dynoed.

See if you can compare the valve springs from the intake cam (upper cam in the pic with rockers still in place) to the exhaust cam. The springs must all be compressed (opening the valves) on the exhaust cam to hold the rockers down.

looks like bent valves... that is the only way i think the rockers could slide out. even with the cams out the rockers should stay in place pretty well. what you need to do is pull the cams and rockers off and look at the valves. if they appear to be out of place they are bent. you also need to pull the front cover. it appears in one of the pics that the chain is out of place (thrown off) which could explain the cams not turning... then again it could also just be the angle of the camera. new valves are not a big deal but you will have to pull the head to replace them and inspect the valve guides.

The chain appears to be tight in the picture so when the engine turns over, it'd have to turn the cams as well. Unless, the cam gear on the crank itself is broken and just spinning when the engine turns over.

Maybe if the RFF's jammed the cam it caused the gear to break? I suspect you'll find the culprit when the front cover comes off.

Ok we got the car down here and this is what we have uncovered. As Tom stated above the 6 exhaust valves on the front head are bent. The chain sprocket for those cams is broken in 3 pieces and the crank keyway is also broken... Pics are to follow.

Head is being sent out for rebuild and a new keyway is needed. Anyone want to help Neal out and send me a 3L crank keyway?

Blackcoog, You want to step up and assist? I need a new key way and the front ported head.

If 3lduratec.com wont help, can anyone sell me the front head that has been ported, maybe I can send it to you and you can rebuild it? Does anyone do that? And a keyway?

when you say keyway what do you mean. as the keyway is actually the slot in the crank. did you mean the key or the gear or both.

I still need a key for the keyway, but we are going to use the 2.5l heads on this instead of finding a new head and porting it.

Do you still have the old motor? If so I believe the key from old motor should fit into the 3L crank. Just a thought.

Are you planning on welding a keyway back on? You stated that it was broken on the 3L motor. I didn't know they were removable. I don't have any scrap 3L's but I do have a junk 2.5L.

It sounds like the keyway broke which then bent the valves on the front head. I don't think that has ever happened to anyone on the boards. If you source a 3L head I'll port it out for you, just cover the shipping to and from. There is a guy over on NECO selling some 3L heads.

We were able to pull the keyway out with a hammer and a vise grip. I dont think they are welded.
