Hello. I have a 2000 Contour 4-cyl 2.0L VCT ATX. My problem is I have a vibration now between 50mph and 70mph. I had new tires mounted and balanced about 1K miles ago and there was no vibration at that time. The vibration comes and goes, it doesn't do it all the time like a wheel balance would. Some days there is no vibration, and then other days it vibrates like crazy. I found that when I accelerate hard, like wide open throttle, it vibrates real bad. Also, this may be unrelated, but when I take off from a stand still I sometimes get a slight clunk or "crunch" from the drivers side front sounds like just in front of the steering column under the hood. What do you think?? Thanks in advance for the advice.

How many miles on the struts and springs? Check cv joints, wheel bearings, tie rods and lower ball joints.

Do the o'clock test.

O'clock test

Jack up the car one side. Place on jack stand.

Grasp wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and push in and out. Any movement, most probably suspect wheel bearing.

9 and 3 o'clock - tie-rod/ball joint.

Lower the car and do the same for the other side.

I will check this out further on Monday when I get back into town. I will post the results when I get them.

Well I checked it out today and found the source of the problem, it is what I had suspected but didn't want to believe. The drivers side inner CV joint has a ton of play in it. I just had this shaft replaced with a new "reman" shaft from Advance Auto Parts less than 3K miles ago! This time I will order the "New" unit and not a "reman", lesson learned. I also found the passenger side wheel bearing has excessive play too. Thanks for all the input.
