ok so when i got the car, the shift was always kind of loose, 2 weeks later the linkage went, got it replaced, and it seemed very tight, i figured thats just the way it is normally and i just have to get used to it, but now i know its just not right.

the shifts arent smooth, going 1 to 2, 3 to 4, it feels like it just knicks neutral therefore you cant shift that fast, its not a smooth motion.

my question is what would cause this?

ALSO, i have an ebay short shifter, i think that might play a part in this.

I really dont like short shifters on contours, they make the shifting so uncomfortable.

Check the bolts on the base of your shifter, I know mine walk themselves out occasionally and you need to retighten them, also if you can find a stock shifter somewhere, try throwing that back in there and see what difference that makes.

Also, when was your trans fluid last changed? It might be worth your while to go to Royal purple, I hear it makes shifts a lot nicer.

I'm using a stock shifter now, and I noticed my trans doesn't shift nearly as smooth as my friends 2000, but I'm still pleased with it. We both have stock shifters, but I am getting a B&M soon, hopefull it'll still shift nice. I noticed all my shifts are really smooth, the only exception is the 1-2 sometimes. If I go on a short trip when the car is cold, and its cold outside, it will never shift real nice, but on a 5+ mile trip the car shifts really nice. Maybe try changing the way you hold the shifter, you might just not be pulling hard enough. Was ATF used in your transmission before, that causes it to become sticky and it won't be as smooth, even if you got rid of it(supposedly what Terry Haines and a bunch of other people say)

not sure what was used before, but when cold it like nudges into 2nd gear, just doesnt go in smooth, it feels like i have to wiggle it into gear no grinding though.
