I didn't realize I was going to lose so much fluid when I pulled the DS axle for my cv boot replacement. I was thinking ounces by the way the manual mentioned it as an afterthought. I think it was more like a couple quarts.

I've added one quart.

Can I start and warm the engine like you'd typically do even though I know it's low (probably way low) on trans fluid?
I don't know how to get it back to the appropriate level w/o risking damage to the trans.

Check the level before starting. If it is low, add ATfluid. You should not start or drive the ATX if the ATFluid level is low.

I put a quart in initially. I knew by what was on the floor and what little I was able to catch it would need at least that much. I went ahead and started it at that point hoping I was in the ballpark. It registered on the dipstick but was a good 1/8-1/4" below the bottom of the crosshatches.
I added a few oz to get it into the normal range and drove it a couple miles to get it warm.
Checked it again - added another few oz. Drove and checked again.
All said and done it took just short of a quart and a half.
