I need to replace the shifter end cables on my '99 csvt. I read and searched as best as I could. It appears that the shift cable ends are not available for the '99. You have to buy the entire cable.

However I read that the bushings from the '98 cable ends can be pushed out and inserted into the cables already in my car. I'm getting ready to order parts. Can anybody confirm that this will work?

Talk to Bill Jenkins at Team Ford in Las Vegas. If the ends are available (and I think they are) he can get them. If they are not available he probably knows the work-around. Also if you need to replace the entire cable set, his price will be much less.

Okay so the answer I got is cars built pre April '99 can use the 98 shift cable ends.

After April '99 you need new cables.

My car was Feb '99. The new shifter cable end arrived without the whole spring mechanism.

Instead of trying to send it back I pushed the bushing out and pressed it into the cable end on the car. Problem fixed.

Next I have to replace my tranny.

take a look at the shift tower, is it all metal and inclosed or is it gold in color and have a plastic cover?

the gold looking one with plastic cover is the focus tower and that is the one iirc that you need whole new cables for as the ends thread onto the cable.

the other type is the same as the 98 where you can change just the ends.

That is very helpful BrApple. In all the reading I did prior to ordering the part I never read that.

Mine is all metal. So I would have known right away.

I still think it is much easier to swap the bushing and not the entire end though.

What's wrong with it?

Its dead.

I was nearly stranded on my way home with the car. I haven't driven it since the first night I had it. It appears the tranny didn't have oil. 75 mph for 20 miles made something go boom. I haven't got the tranny out yet to figure out what went boom.

I can't shift the car.
